Athlete Spotlight: Andrea Mauger
The Academy at the Lakes junior's forte is making plays on the basketball court.
Land O' Lakes Patch readers probably remember Andrea Mauger of Academy at the Lakes for her sophomore exploits in track and field. Mauger was the only athlete and still is the only individual athlete to make regionals in track and field in school history. Her shotput throw of 29 feet 5 inches punched her ticket to the 2011 regionals.
However, Mauger's forte is making plays on the basketball court. As a sophomore last season, she led her team to a 15-5 record and an appearance in the regional finals. This year, the girls basketball team is out to a 3-1 start.
I caught up with Andrea after a buzzer-beater, 52-51 loss to Academy of the Holy Names. She had 16 points, four assists and four rebounds in the game.
What is your training regimen like for basketball season?
Once per week, I run outside here at school. I try to run two miles on the weekend at home. Then we have practice every day after school, except when we have games, usually on Tuesday and Thursday.
As a team leader, what do you think is expected from you?
Be calm under pressure, help when people are out of position and set an example.
Is there a home-court advantage for you here?
This gym is small, inviting. I like to think it's my gym. I've cried, puked, everything in here.
The rim here seems unforgiving, does that make it harder for visiting teams?
It definitely affects your shot. I'm used to it now.
How high is the bar set for this year's team?
We're shooting for states. There's no excuse not to go all they way.
How well are you keeping up with school?
I made honor roll my first semester and I'm in all AP and honors classes.
Which schools are you looking at attending?
