The Land O’ Lakes High football team is trading pigskin for putters. For a day, anyway.
The team is planning a golf tournament May 6 and hopes plenty of golfers will sign up to hit the links and support the team.
“We are shooting for a full course of 144 players,” Land O’ Lakes High Touchdown Club vice-president Jeff Randall said.
The proceeds from the tournament will be used to upgrade several things for the football team, Randall said.
The main investment will be new video equipment for use in recording and replay. The funds also will be used for other equipment the school doesn’t cover, such as practice uniforms, upgrading the weight room and replacing a motorized water cooler that broke last season, Randall said.
In addition to a round of golf, the tournament also features two shots at big pots: A $10,000 putting contest sponsored by All Phase Electric and Maintenance Inc., and a $10,000 hole-in-one contest sponsored by Reeves Import Motorcars.
The winner of the putting contest will get a chance at one 50-foot putt for the $10,000 prize, Randall said.
Having the crowd gathered as that golfer attempts the putt "will be pretty exciting, " he said.
And everyone will have a shot at the hole-in-one contest, Randall said. “The first person to hit the hole-in-one wins it.”
There will be barbeque cooking on the course and Coach Brian Wachtel will be out greeting golfers, Randall said.
A silent auction will also be held during the event. One item up for grabs: A football autographed by Time Tebow.
“We’re hoping to make this an annual event that everyone can look forward to.”
A tournament registration form is attached to this article in the photo section, and also is available on the team’s website. The entry fee for an individual player is $80.
Sponsorship opportunities also are available for teams and businesses. Check the brochure for pricing and details.
Registration and the putting contest begin at 11:30 a.m. May 6 at Quail Hollow Golf Course in Wesley Chapel. The tournament begins with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Dinner, door prize and silent auction winner announcements begin at 6 p.m.
