Pilot Identified in Saturday’s Cessna Crash

The plane went down around 3 a.m. Sept. 22, killing an Edelweiss Air pilot.

Andreas Wendel, 48, of Basserdorf, Switzerland, has been identified as the pilot in yesterday’s fatal plane crash in Land O’ Lakes.

According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, Wendel was a pilot for Edelweiss Air and has no relatives in the United States. His next of kin has been notified about the crash.

Wendel was flying a 2004 Cessna 172S that went down around 3 a.m. in the area of Lake Irene Drive and Bexley Road. The crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration.

“We didn’t hear anything,” said Alisa Weaver, who lives on Lake Irene near Bexley Road.

The crash was the second in a week in the Land O’ Lakes area. An Ultralight flew into power lines near Pilot Country Estates last weekend, killing the pilot.
