Romney in Pasco: Should He Be Allowed at a School?

Pasco County School District officials are taking heat for their decision to allow Gov. Mitt Romney to speak. We want to hear what you think!

As Gov. Mitt Romney prepares for his visit to Pasco County tomorrow, some people are crying foul over the school district’s decision to allow the rally at Land O’ Lakes High School.

The United School Employees of Pasco say the district has violated its own policy by allowing a political rally to take place on the 20325 Gator Lane campus, according to a story in The Tampa Tribune.

Republican school superintendent Heather Fiorentino and the largely Republican school board were asked by former gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink, a Democrat, to use a Pasco school classroom to film a commercial two years ago.

That request was denied, but the Romney request wasn’t.

The district is now saying Romney’s request is different. It’s not to film a commercial. Instead officials have likened it to any organization requesting to rent a public school for a public event.

State Democratic officials aren’t so sure.

"I think it's a huge double standard, and I think the Romney campaign needs to change their venue," Florida Democratic Party Vice Chair Alison Morano told the Tribune. "If the Romney camp is going to act like political hacks, they should go somewhere else and do it."

The school district, however, did allow Vice President Joe Biden to pay a visit to Oakstead Elementary last year. It could be argued that Biden's appearance was also political in nature. The Democrat came to Land O' Lakes as part of a tour to raise support for the American Jobs Act.

What do you think? Should the Pasco County School District allow Romney to speak at Land O' Lakes High? Should it have said no? Share your thoughts in the comments section.

If he wants to give the school money in exchange for rally space, why on Earth would a school board that's constantly asking for more money turn that down? Money is money. They're not renting space to Al Qaeda, it's just a political candidate. Relax and use the cash for education.

Neither Rommey or Obama should be allowed to speakm in front of High School Students. However they could tape a message and after being examined and determined proper, then an only then, should it be shown to the students on a voluntary basis.

I can't believe that the Dems are going to use this to keep Romney out, this just affirms the fear they have that OBAMA will lose this race..for SURE..this is ridiculous, they are not using it for a COMMERCIAL..it is a rally a PUBLIC rally in a PUBLIC high school...get with it PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!

I do not call lying an education.Romney is an all out merchant of deceptive positions not an example of core values. He will go to another High school and say the opposite statements....Cash for the school can be gotten in a more honorable way.

I think that Romney and Obama should be invited to speak at Land o lakes high school and Gulf high school. I think it would be a very educational experience for the kids, especially those in Government and Econ classes (anywho that was the name of them when I was in school LOL!).
And if they will pay to rent the space as well as speak? That money should go into the school district funds to help. Its a win-win situation either way.

There is nothing wrong with Romney coming to Land O Lakes, High. I think it is wonderful for our children in the area. Gives them a chance to actually see how goverment is suppose to be run. Why are there always people trying to stop the good things? I think they made the right decision, I am excited about it being in our town, I have lived here 67 years, It is wonderful to see this in Land O Lakes. I am going to see Romney on Sat. Hope to see lots more of our community there as well.

Perhaps more like how Government is not suppose to run.Cash, negative ads and words of deception.None of this could be better exhibited then by a person who changes his position from hour to hour day to day....No way is this Leadership no way to set an example for our youths

Glad to see there is SOME outrage at least. There was a HUGE uproar in the media when the First Lady gave a speech at a school in Miami-Dade a few months ago. Given the situation with Alex Sink, there's an obvious double standard, but we all know who is in charge in Pasco.

As long as the students aren't involved, I don't see the big deal with letting folks rent space for these sorts of things as long as it's done fairly. Maybe they'll learn from this going forward & not let their politics get involved next time.

Actually, students are being involved. Not only are they promoting the rally at our school (on our school news, welcome sign, school website, etc.) but they are "strongly encouraging" cheerleaders to attend in LOLHS uniform. It was originally mandatory, but some parents complained.

Good idea, use the money the school gets for their students. Students are not involved nice to see a school administration use their heads.

I think it is a good idea. I would think it would be exciting for the students.

I'm glad to see all the positive comments about why it's good for Candidate Romney to be able to hold a rally on a schools ground here in Pasco. However, it were the sitting President asking to do this I sure all those positive comments would turn negative. The powers that be in Pasco County and a large segment of the citizenry are all hypocrites. It's really a shame what this country has come to.

I agree with you, Herman. I remember when Obama addressed children on TV a few years ago, and the parents went nuts. Of course, this is not the same thing. I'm not voting for Romney. I don't care where he talks to his fans. In fact, I think it would be cool if the dollars went to the LOLHS teacher of the year, assuming there is such a person.

Students aren't involved? How about the student marching band that will be playing? How about the students who were asked to volunteer? How about the ad on the schools' website? If this is the new way Pasco plans to raise funds for schools, I guess I can safely vote "NO" for the renewal of "Penny for Pasco". Hypocrisy abounds!

It seems odd that the New Port Richey Patch decided to report on this issue (which is outside New Port Richey) but not the partisan speeches that took place at Gulf High School (inside New Port Richey).

This is being done on a Saturday, not during school hours to a captive audience. Students that play in the band play in many venues and at many events. The student volunteers are just that, volunteers. It is not the same as a candidate being invited to an official school event or to a class of "captive listeners".

I have reason to believe all students in the band or anyone participating as a group all volunteered at their own will. They will be captive listeners to the Art of Deceptive speech. How to succeed in Government by Munipulation and Greed.Civics is far from what will be heard.

As a teacher who supports Mitt Romney, I have witnessed colleagues spending class time recruiting students for democrat phone banks and door-to-door campaigns during the school day. The teacher unions are drones for Obama without regard for the opportunity for jobs for their students upon graduation. The association supports an agenda that piles enormous debt on the backs of our students thus stifling their future opportunities. The schools are public buildings and used for many varied events. This rally affords an opportunity for an educational experience for the community. Opposition by the teachers union is hypocritical.

That is exactly what I worry about. The students being influenced by someone in power over them, their teachers. That is so wrong!

So is the hypocrisy of Romney's lack of support for educational funding.Perhaps Big Bird may be showing up a the rally with his crying towel.Sesame Street the most effective universal eduction in the world reaching households everywhere using only one school room. Reaching homes of people with limited means of funds.Think of that saving alone.Romney just cannot see these things.

Please note, further to my original comment, all the activities I spoke about (marching band, seeking student volunteers for ANY political activity, etc) are currently forbidden by District policy! And if a teacher or anyone else is caught abusing this policy, they risk losing their job!

Well...we all know that Obama supporters used a false front as being from the Supervisor of Elections office. These fact people got into Pasco High Schools registering students to vote with Obama pins and stickers on their clip boards. Subliminal prompts....Vote for Obama! As to the school property being used in Pasco, hey paid for it and yes, it will be a Republican non-subliminal message. At least they were up front about it! Sometimes, what comes around goes around, anyone with half a brain knows what the current Administration and Democratically controlled Congress did for the first two years of "Obamrea's" first two years...Further destroy this nation. Looked at your food bill lately? Oh yes, this message brought to you by a registered Independent!

Either you are non-partisan and let all parties use the facilities or you don't let any. This is a really stupid question. $2000 is chump change to all of them. Why not do the county some good and charge $5k or $10k. It's still a drop in the bucket for them.

I don't care who it was speaking there - I live less than a mile from the high school and tonight it took me about 45 minutes to get home - it looked like a damn freak show in front of the high school, one man dressed as jesus holding a sign "honk for jesus" and a few others held similar signs - and people were rude - my neighbor has an OBAMA sign in her front yard, she happens to be African American and people were calling her the "N" word - if anyone wants to hold a POLITICAL RALLY go to a foot ball stadium not a local high school - traffic was a nightmare for hours before and after - people parking where ever on the highway just to walk to the event - enough already!

I am amazed that having the opportunity to see a political figure speak in person which may only come once in your lifetime is reduced to petty complaints about traffic. I am also not surprised that the democrats question this because it concerns a republican speaker. Im sure it would be the republicans scowling if it was a democrat speaking. Since the Romney campaign has the money to spend and the county could use the money (I just bought a $20 cheese cake and $15 cookies at a school fundraiser) I say let them pay. He wasn't to address the student body. It was a political rally for anyone wanting to attend.
