Ski Show Set for Saturday
Land O’ Lakes Honorary Mayor hopefuls have a number of fundraisers planned in the coming days.
As one mayoral contender pulls out all the stops for a water ski show and barbecue this Saturday, the other is preparing to teach women how to boost their personal style.
The upcoming fundraisers are all part of the Land O’ Lakes Honorary Mayor’s race. The community tradition is staged each year by the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce. Contestants vie against each other in a battle to see who can raise the most money. Proceeds benefit the chamber and each candidate’s charity of choice. The winner is announced during the chamber's holiday banquet in December.
Candidates this year are Dr. Deborah Hawley of Hawley & Hawley Dental Associates and Rene Van Hout of LOL Transport & Moving. Hawley is raising money for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Van Hout’s charities of choice are Oasis – a Pregnancy Center and the Heritage Park Foundation.
Coming up in the fundraising calendar is a barbecue and ski show this Saturday, Oct. 8. Dubbed “The Honorary Mayor’s Barbecue,” the event takes place at Hungry Harry’s Famous Bar-B-Q, 3116 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., from 3 to 7 p.m.
The water ski show is being put on courtesy of Bay Area Water Sports.
“It is a nice community event that is an old fashioned thing we used to do all the time,” said Deborah Hawley, who grew up in the Land O’ Lakes area and was a member of the Lake Padgett Water Ski Show Team.
Jim Kranendonk, one of the owners of Bay Area Water Sports, said attendees are in for a great performance this Saturday. A number of professional water skiers from Cypress Gardens are expected to make their way to Land O’ Lakes for the event, he said.
“We’re offering a professional style ski show, close up for people to view and for people to meet skiers,” Kranendonk said. Spectators can expect to be treated to pyramids, barefoot performances and more. If the weather cooperates, a hang gliding demonstration may also be given.
Kranendonk said Hungry Harry’s lakefront property is a “great venue” for this type of show. “We hope everybody’s there,” he said.
Tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for children 16 and younger and free for kids under 2. They are available at Holloway’s, Harvey’s Hardware, McFarlane's Appliance and Hawley & Hawley Dental. Tickets will also be available at the door.
As Hawley prepares for the barbecue, Van Hout is getting ready for a few big fundraisers herself.
Upcoming on Oct. 16 is the “Sophisticated Style and Color Workshop” at Wesley Chapel Toyota, 5300 Eagleston Blvd. This is a full-day, hands-on workshop for ladies that want to learn about makeup and wardrobe color selection and how to buy the right bra.
The cost is $20 a participant. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.
Other upcoming events in Van Hout’s campaign include:
- Oct. 18 – A meet and greet and open mic night at Organic Life takes place from 5 to 9 p.m.
- Oct. 24 – Hungry Harry’s BBQ Night from 4 to 8 p.m. A portion of sale proceeds will go to Van Hout’s campaign.
