Stolen iPhone’s GPS Implicates Inmate in Theft

The owner of the stolen phone used its GPS tracking ability to locate his property at the Land O’ Lakes Jail.

An inmate at the Land O’ Lakes Jail discovered yesterday just why smartphones are called that.

Christopher Lindsey, 22, of Land O’ Lakes was already behind bars Sept. 16 on a disorderly intoxication charge when he was connected to an auto burglary and theft at Whiskey Willie’s—the bar where he was initially arrested.

According to a Pasco County complaint affidavit, Lindsey is accused of breaking into a car outside the 1624 N. Dale Mabry Highway bar and taking an iPhone. The car’s owner, however, knew exactly what to do when he discovered his phone missing: He activated the iPhone’s GPS.

Where the GPS took him, however, was likely a surprise for the man. It led him to the Land O’ Lakes Jail where Lindsey had been booked earlier on disorderly intoxication charges.

A Pasco County incident report says Lindsey was removed from the bar Sept. 16 after attempting to start fights with numerous patrons. When a physical altercation broke out, deputies were called to the scene.

Lindsey, the affidavit said, was booked into the jail with the iPhone listed as one of his personal possessions. The smartphone’s owner, however, begged to differ.

“The victim contacted the Land O’ Lakes Jail when he tracked his phone via a GPS application to the jail location. It was retrieved by Sgt. Peabody,” the affidavit states. “The victim provided the key code number for the phone lock and described the phone’s contents.”

At this point, deputies asked Lindsey about the iPhone. He told them he had two phones on him—one was his and the other belonged to his wife, the affidavit said. Lindsey wasn’t able to provide the key code for the iPhone. When questioned further, he told deputies he purchased the iPhone while at the bar.

Lindsey of 4330 Libby Lane in Land O’ Lakes remained in jail today without bond. In addition to the disorderly intoxication, grand theft and burglary auto charges, he also was arrested on an outstanding warrant for carrying a concealed firearm, DUI and possession of a firearm while subject to injunction.
