I Defy You to See a Real Difference Between the Candidates

In this corner, the talking head from Chicago, who learned his political licks in the most corrupt city, in America. This head looks amazingly like a peanut when sporting its thinned lipped smile. His repertoire includes bat whiskers, mummified toenails and adder’s tongue.

In the other corner, the talking head from Massachusetts, who learned his political licks in the most liberal state, in America. His head takes on the appearance of a deformed gourd when he speaks. His repertoire includes black cat fat, eye of Newt and hen bane.

I defy you to see any difference between them. During the next fifty years, which is how long the campaign will seem to last, we Americans will be bored, vexed and confused.

We will know less than we do now by the time we vote. Our confidence in our political system will be stretched, as it is every four years. Dropping the same pile of poop repeatedly does not make it true.

Forget elephants and donkeys, the truth, the poop smells and looks the same no matter which bull drops it.

Obama will spin around and bring his wand to the task of destroying the opposing warlock. Poof, a little witches' bane about Bain.

OK, so Mitt has more money than Solomon. Once you pass $10 million, what does it matter? Doesn’t money kind of become a non issue? Who honestly cares? You can find dirt on all of us, if there is no dirt on you, you aren’t imaginative enough to get into trouble.

Mitt spins, or maybe just his head spins. Pea soup does not spew from his mouth; remember he can afford lobster bisque. Poof, a little eye of Newt mixed with a bad economic record blasts Barack. Good Lord, who said Newt is no longer influencing politics?

Wait, there has been a good economic period, how did I miss that? The debt grows, our rights shrink and our frustration mounts, but it will always be the fault of the sitting president.

The political party that runs the country continues to divide and conquer. Half of you are giving each other high fives, thinking I’m talking about Republicans. The other half is snickering, and sure I’m talking about the Democrats. I’m talking about the Depublicans or Remocrats. Thanks to Pinellas Beaches reader Nic for those words.

As you blame one mudslinging warlock over the other, remember the Democrats brought us the welfare state, but the Republicans brought us the IRS long before welfare needed funding. The majority of Americans undoubtedly voted for both.

The Republicans continue to decry all social systems while claiming to be protecting Social Security. It’s all about votes. Wake up people, the size of our government will shrink when Congress passes a pay cut, or, in other words, when pigs fly. American politicians could supply the fertilizer needs of the entire world for the next few months.

As the wands frantically spit and spew, and spells are cast, there are real issues being ignored. Why? Because doing anything could be detrimental to campaigning. Here is one of my personal pet peeves. Why do average Americans continue to call the proposed health care systems socialized medicine? If it were socialized medicine, it would be free.

Hello, this is just another example of political parties placing catch phrases and ideas in the heads of the masses. It amounts to, one for you, one for me. Pee Wee Herman should be a politician. “I know you are, but what am I?”

Obamacare and Romneycare are pretty much the same proposal. How can they talk about them? The proposals are hundreds of pages and prepared by dozens of minions. It would take a dozen high powered lawyers’ months to sort it out. It’s best to leave it alone.

I’m not arguing for or against socialized medicine or forced insurance. Although the whole socialized medicine thing is a smoke screen designed to keep us from noticing we are being driven into the corral of the insurance industry. As all average Americans, I have made the decision many times in my life to survive without health insurance. It’s not hard to decide between five hundred bucks a month and the food it takes to feed your kids. It’s calculated gambling.

Politicians have no clue what this means. Most of them grew up with a silver syringe in their backside and then stepped from college into a place where deciding between health care, dental care and food will never be a necessity.

And these are the people who will decide our fate. Marvelous! I don’t know the answer, and we need to keep voting. But we as Americans must figure out a way to control the choices we have. We simply keep electing the same politicians.

I just wish that the people we elect to represent us (at all levels of government) would display more skills in doing their jobs. I think many people who run for office think it is some easy job that anyone can do. It takes real talent and real skills to do those jobs well, whether it is a school board position, a state representative or one of the one hundred people elected to the Senate. Many times voters choose a name that sounds familiar or they vote for the "pretty face' or just give their loyalty to a political party and let it decide; rarely do we voters think about what skills it takes to do the job. No wonder candidates take advantage of us! While I don't agree that the two Presidential candidates are so alike that it doesn't matter who wins, I am really afraid a significant number of voters will agree with you.

Well said Lynda I completely agree. I'm just looking for people to quit accepting things on what little information they are spoon fed.

Thanks for this opinion. Indeed, there is no substantial differences between the 2 major parties candidates and what they have to offer to the voters. We'll have the same type of regime whomever is elected coming November. One that favors corporations to the detriment of the people.

Your column is labeled as being 'local.' Could this be better defined? Where are you located? Regards.

The two major parties differ significantly on issues of personal freedom. The GOP party that will subject pregnant women to a "vaginal probe" is substantially different than the Democratic party that says it will protect women's reproductive choices.

Hi D. C-K and thanks for the comment. I'm sorry it took so long to get you an answer. I had a series of mini strokes two sundays ago and am having to learn to type again. No worries i'm very lucky and am doing well. I am from Georgia, but moved to Florida recently. I have an apartment in the Kendell area, but I am paid to write many thing so I travel constantly. I try to write from where ever i am and am really enjoying the number and quality of comments that I get from Pinellas Beach. I need to get over there and visit soon and have plans to do so.

I think you need to recheck your perspective. My view (from the middle) is that I see a lot of difference between the two candidates and parties. From your reactionary perspective, they look the same because neither is conservative enough for your tastes.

Churchill said that " .... democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…". It may not be pretty, but I'm happy I was lucky enough to be born and raised in this country. Sorry you don't feel the same.

Thanks Jon and it's funny you say conservative enough for me. I am a Democrat and am constantly called a liberal so-n-so. Place whatever word there that works. I actually am in the middle myself and continue to try to make people understand they need to vote for the person, not the party. I can tell by your comment you are passionate and intelligent. I love my country and consider it my duty as an American to point out such things. Rocking the boat created our democracy and rocking the boat will make it stronger. Freedom of speech is a great thing as long as it don't cause trouble it seems.
"The citizen who thinks he sees that the commonwealth's political clothes are worn out, and yet holds his peace and does not agitate for a new suit, is disloyal, he is a traitor. That he may be the only one who thinks he sees this decay, does not excuse him: it is his duty to agitate anyway, and it is the duty of others to vote him down if they do not see the matter as he does."

Despite how you may feel, they are both professional politicians, and this very aspect forces them to do the same thing: win at all costs. What both have in their favor is that very few people will spend the time and effort to fully understand their positions and the impact those will have on our society. Few of us will actually read & understand legislation language (proposed & passed), executive orders, appointments, etcetera. Most of us simply consume what somebody has summarized for us (friends, talk radio, TV, web sites, authors, etc.) and most of us will gravitate toward those sources that align with how we feel. The candidates rely on this, as carefully constructed and well-funded marketing are crafting the messages that drive us to advocate and vote in very specific ways. Just look at nearly every post on this site- nobody goes after the raw data, they just reference what somebody else has packaged for them. But in all fairness, the level of effort to truly understand is quite high, and few of us (including myself) will ever be willing to do it… and that is a big win for both candidates.

Great reading and many valid points. It is a shame that this country has slid this far. When the greater part of the population is feeling like they are in good times they only see the end of the rainbow. It is not until the rain falls hard that they realize today and those ahead are the rainy days we were supposed to save for. Unfortunately what we thought was solid ground has turned to mud. Only those who are at the end of the rainbow get to enjoy it. For all others we must realize that we stood by or allowed to many others to stand by. We must now trudge through the mud which is made all the more difficult by those slinging it. I applaud those of you who bring the truth to light even when it differs from the side of the fence you favor. I personally vote a split ticket and have been fooled by a candidate or two so I appreciate all intelligent factual commentary.

Let us look at taxes. Specifically the Fed Income Tax. We can agree that both the President & Mr Romney have paid the Taxes that they were Legally Required to pay. The question is: To what extent have they gamed the system to reduce their taxes and at what point is it Unethical to do so I have no doubt that many would say that it is ethical to do Anything to reduce personal tax burdens. Fortunately, some of those things while legal, ie) moving overseas, preclude running for office. If the candidates take all of the exemptions and deductions that they are entitled to; Fine. But if they resort to major tax avoidance schemes, hiring expensive tax professional, just to avoid paying...and this is a Zero sum game...then other, presumably less able to afford individuals, will have to make up the shortfall. We can argue as to whether taxes should be raised or lowered; or whether services should be increased or decreased. But Government must be supported by those who can most afford to do it. Not those that have the least ability to avoid doing it. At some point, Tax Avoidance issues should become an issue in this and many other contests. It is Not what is legal that really matters; it is what is morally right.

Totally understand and agree. I just wish they wouldn't always find stuff like this to turn them from the issues. Our system gets muckier and muddier each cycle.

Let their own words be the guide
Robomney at it's finest:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWDJEc92d38

but in actuality, it's how they ACTUALLY GOVERN that people should tune into. I love how both major parties walk around providing ear candy for the populace as they daily rape us left and right. Most love the eargasms, but they never see the evident rape. They always awaken with that painful, violated feeling, but since the corporate controlled lamestream media doesn't inform them of their true predicament, they simply baa baa everyday. Most people need to be told what to think and believe........the television programming does it job.

The two-party Dictatorship is what we have.......and it's been planned.

"The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps, of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to the doctrinaire and academic thinkers. Instead, the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can "throw the rascals out" at any election without leading to any profound or extreme shifts in policy."

FYI: Quigley was Bill Clinton's mentor and the Council on Foreign Relations(CFR) historian.

Who is the CFR you ask? Perhaps the wife of Mr. Clinton has an answer:
