Bands Are Ready To Rock Crews Lake Park

Rockus Maximus Revolution starts tomorrow night at 6 p.m.

After months of preparing, eight bands are ready to face off in a battle March 25.

“We’ve been working for so long,” said Raelynn Knight, who plays rhythm guitar in Y-12. The Land O’ Lakes-based band is one of the eight facing off in Rockus Maximus Revolution: Battle of the Bands XIV.

Spearheaded by the Pasco County Libraries, the annual battle is put on without a penny of taxpayer money, said Paul Stonebridge, the library system’s teen services manager. Major sponsors, such as Rasmussen College, offset the costs.

The event is designed to enable bands, which must have a majority of members under the age of 21, to get stage and promotion experience under their belts. Bands in this year's contest come from Pasco, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. By contest rules, four of the bands must be from Pasco.

The winner of the live battle at Crews Lake Park, 16739 Crews Lake Dr. in Spring Hill, will get 10 hours of recording time at Morrisound Recording, 12111 N. 56th St. in Tampa. Other prizes are also on the line, including a $500 gift certificate to Encore Music for the winner of an Internet-based version of the contest.

Palmer Wolfenden of Y-12 said the bands appreciate the support they’ve received from fans and the community. The musicians, she added, have put in a lot of work to make sure Friday’s concert is a great one.

“We’ve tried so hard,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

So, why should people turn out on a Friday night?

“It’s a free show and there’s not a lot of free things to do these days – especially concerts,” Stonebridge pointed out. The cost of entry to the concert is a valid library card. Visitors who don’t have one can sign up at the event.

In addition to live bands, the battle will feature a few other activities.

“We are giving away free glow sticks all night,” Stonebridge said.

There will also be a video gaming pavilion where youth can play Rock Band on the Xbox, along with Wii games. Snacks will also be available with proceeds going to the Friends of the Library.

Adding a special twist to the night, a pie throwing contest is also planned.

“We’re raising money for Japan,” Stonebridge explained. Concert goers can pay $1 to vote for who will get pies tossed at them. The potential victims are members of the battle’s cast, including Stonebridge.

Money raised will be brought directly to Japan by a group led by Stonebridge that’s planning a.

“They are still going to need money by then,” Stonebridge said. Money will likely go to the Japanese Red Cross.

The concert itself will include performances by all eight bands with other acts and events planned in between.
