New Fitness Biz Fires Up Yogis in Land O' Lakes

Florida Power Yoga is slated to open its doors Feb. 8, and promises not to convey 'tranquility, serenity or peace.'

There's a new business coming to Land O' Lakes and its mission is to fire up your workouts and bring you more power than peace.

Florida Power Yoga, slated to open Feb. 8, is nothing you might imagine when you think of a yoga studio, owner Denice McClure said.

"There is nothing that conveys tranquility, serenity or peace.  It's pure power to get your engine revved up," McClure said.

The Land O' Lakes resident said she's been searching for a place similar to the studio she practiced at in Ohio before moving to this area.

There, McClure said she always felt "as if you were at this amazing party where everyone whether new to the studio or a student there for a long time always felt warm, welcomed and energized the second they opened the door."

She didn't find that atmosphere at many of the places she checked out in the Bay area. So she decided to open her own studio in her new hometown of Land O' Lakes.

"It's my new city and I love it here, so why not open what I love for everyone else to experience, too," McClure said.

Don't expect anything that comes to mind when you think traditional yoga, though.

"I love to laugh and not take it so serious yet know exactly how to get the entire class digging deep to bring on the power stretch they are searching for. People tend to gravitate to my style because I'm real, I'm edgy and you never know what the expect except a great yoga experience."

Every yoga instructor has their own teaching style, she said. "I don't like the flowery language from teachers or 'let's all feel all happy' style. I like a teacher who is the same on the mat as they are off the mat."

That's what you will find at Florida Power Yoga, she said.

"When I am talking to you at the grocery store or gym, I am talking to you the same way on the mats. I don't go all Yoga Teacher Voice and spiritual on you," McClure said. "I like a sweat dripping, heart pounding, challenging style of yoga for fitness, for quicker muscle recovery between weight lifting sessions and for athletic injury prevention."

The studio also features an instructor who holds an impressive distinction. McClure's 12-year-old daughter, Christie, is the youngest person in the country to have the highest yoga certification of a 500-hour teacher.

"To me, it doesn't make a difference who I am teaching to," Christie said. "I think of everyone the same, it doesn't matter how old, how young, what job they have, or anything, everyone came to me for the same reason, to get a great yoga practice in."

And as for the peaceful part, there is a little bit of that. You just have to work really hard for that "much-deserved Svasana (corpse pose)", McClure said.

"You work really hard for that five to seven minutes at the end of class and I can tell you from experience that when you finally get to lay on the floor and close your eyes, that peacefulness is such a sweet, blissed-out mind-relaxing time that you will struggle through anything to get that five to seven minutes."

Florida Power Yoga opens Feb. 8 at 7016 Land O' Lakes Blvd.
