New Fitness Biz Fires Up Yogis in Land O' Lakes

Florida Power Yoga is slated to open its doors Feb. 8, and promises not to convey 'tranquility, serenity or peace.'

There's a new business coming to Land O' Lakes and its mission is to fire up your workouts and bring you more power than peace.

Florida Power Yoga, slated to open Feb. 8, is nothing you might imagine when you think of a yoga studio, owner Denice McClure said.

"There is nothing that conveys tranquility, serenity or peace.  It's pure power to get your engine revved up," McClure said.

The Land O' Lakes resident said she's been searching for a place similar to the studio she practiced at in Ohio before moving to this area.

There, McClure said she always felt "as if you were at this amazing party where everyone whether new to the studio or a student there for a long time always felt warm, welcomed and energized the second they opened the door."

She didn't find that atmosphere at many of the places she checked out in the Bay area. So she decided to open her own studio in her new hometown of Land O' Lakes.

"It's my new city and I love it here, so why not open what I love for everyone else to experience, too," McClure said.

Don't expect anything that comes to mind when you think traditional yoga, though.

"I love to laugh and not take it so serious yet know exactly how to get the entire class digging deep to bring on the power stretch they are searching for. People tend to gravitate to my style because I'm real, I'm edgy and you never know what the expect except a great yoga experience."

Every yoga instructor has their own teaching style, she said. "I don't like the flowery language from teachers or 'let's all feel all happy' style. I like a teacher who is the same on the mat as they are off the mat."

That's what you will find at Florida Power Yoga, she said.

"When I am talking to you at the grocery store or gym, I am talking to you the same way on the mats. I don't go all Yoga Teacher Voice and spiritual on you," McClure said. "I like a sweat dripping, heart pounding, challenging style of yoga for fitness, for quicker muscle recovery between weight lifting sessions and for athletic injury prevention."

The studio also features an instructor who holds an impressive distinction. McClure's 12-year-old daughter, Christie, is the youngest person in the country to have the highest yoga certification of a 500-hour teacher.

"To me, it doesn't make a difference who I am teaching to," Christie said. "I think of everyone the same, it doesn't matter how old, how young, what job they have, or anything, everyone came to me for the same reason, to get a great yoga practice in."

And as for the peaceful part, there is a little bit of that. You just have to work really hard for that "much-deserved Svasana (corpse pose)", McClure said.

"You work really hard for that five to seven minutes at the end of class and I can tell you from experience that when you finally get to lay on the floor and close your eyes, that peacefulness is such a sweet, blissed-out mind-relaxing time that you will struggle through anything to get that five to seven minutes."

Florida Power Yoga opens Feb. 8 at 7016 Land O' Lakes Blvd.

Congrats Denice and Christie. All the yogis out there are lucky to have both of you. What a great concept and a needed change from what's out there. And Christie, what you have accomplished at such a young age is a true inspiration to all those around, especially kids today. You hear so much about kids getting more active. Hopefully you will inspire them to get up and get moving. Congrats to all of you. Karen I

I had the pleasure of attending the opening Master Class at Florida Power Yoga. It was not only an awesome of yoga practice, but a kickin party too! Between the Teekie torches, fire breather, graffiti style artwork, music, the night sky, mat to mat yogis, the phenomenal teachers, and of course, the heart-pumping, sweat-inducing, blissful yoga, it was one unforgettable night! Denice and her team sure know how to have a good time! I definitely recommend this studio and her style of power yoga. Just be warned......it's highly addictive!

I was SUPER lucky to be able to fly from WI to FL to be part of Denice's pre-opening party. Not only did I get to be part of the master class (co-taught by Tomiomi, Denice & Christie) but I was also able to co-teach Yoga Body Bootcamp for the weekend! It was such an amazing experience! It was great to be able to show Florida a little taste of what Florida Power Yoga is going to be like. I have no doubts that FPY will be a huge hit! Denice's style & love for laughter and life will leave you wanting to come back for more :)

I have been doing yoga for a few years now. I got connected with Denice over the internet, I was immediately gravitated towards her page "The Yoga Cocktail Party". This was the first time I had seen anyone acknowledge the amazing feeling you get when you are rolling out mats; just before class starts.I absolutely love that they embrace that! Especially because I have had teachers in the past tell me "now save the charged energy you get from before and after class for another place- a yoga studio is a place to be grounded". Well, sometimes I disagree. I am a meat-loving, energetic, Christian and I don't feel the need to change who I am to be a yogi. Mostly,I want to unrolll my pink leopard $7 mat, have fun with my friends, and stay in shape- mentally and physically. If you want to go somewhere and feel no pressure, here is the place for you. I drove 3 hours to be a part of Florida Power Yoga's grand opening and I would do it over and over again. Denice exudes the feeling of acceptance towards everyone and the attitude that anything goes. This resonates with the idea that it doesn't matter what you LOOK like, it matters what you FEEL like. Florida Power Yoga is a place where everyone can FEEL great and reap the rewards of practicing, while having a great time doing it. I think Denice and her studio are going to reach new parts of the community with their style of yoga and make difference in many people's lives. But don't take my word for it, find out for yourself!

When I first met Denice, she inspired me right away! I am in my 50's and was very out of shape! After just a couple weeks working with her, I was feeling so much better about myself and much stronger! I was really loving the way my body and mind were transforming daily! I was less stressed and more energetic than I'd been in a very long time! Denice, and all the friends I have made since September, inspire me to one day very soon, be able to get in to WHEEL and HANDSTAND!! This studio, Florida Power Yoga, is gonna be my home away from home and I will be bringing with me, my teenage son and hopefully my husband! My son went with me to the Big Party in on January 11th and unrolled a mat for the very first time and I couldn't be more proud! He said it was tough but he will do it again, he will never let anyone say that Yoga is a chick thing!! Thanks Denice and Gang for bringing FPY to my neck of the woods!!

DrMichael Garko Florida Power Yoga (FPY), under the ownership, guidance, and direction of Denice McClure is a welcomed and needed addition to the Tampa Bay area. With Denice as my yoga instructor, my health was enhanced and body transformed to another level of fitnes within a short period of time. Beginning, intermediate and advanced students of yoga and consumers of health, wellness and wellbeing will discover, as I have, that Denice possesses an open, heart, mind and spirit, embracing all who seek to achieve a longer life, with quality of life, using the practice of hot, power yoga as important instrument of physical, psychological and spiritual health. I look forward with great anticipation to the opening of FPY. I endorse FPY and encourage all those who is interested in improving their health, wellness and wellbeing to join this state of the art yoga studio. Namaste. I had been practicing heated flow/power yoga for about a year before I met Denice. Once I started taking Denice's classes, I feel like my yoga experience was changed forever. Denice and Christie's classes were like no yoga classes I had ever experienced! I have been waiting over a year for the studio to open and I will be the first one in line when it does. Congratulations and I can't wait!!

Every boy & girl, every guy & gal should get on a mat and practice yoga.... Took me 37 years to realize why this has been around for thousands of years. Its not a fad and it's not going away. I am very happy with my life but I could only imagine where I would be if I started way back in my teens. I do want to add that doing one or two classes should be the deciding factor if you like doing yoga or not. It truly is about your instructor, how he or she teaches, the style of class (there are many), whether or not music is played (some like traditional, others upbeat, mainstream, etc), and overall vibe of the studio. I personally like teachers who make you laugh, smile, feel good by explaining things, adjusts you while your in a posture. FPY has it all!!! What a great event and honor to have been the DJ!!!! :)
