This Is No Ordinary Workout

Provides health benefits and is a lot of fun!

This isn’t your typical exercise class.

Every Wednesday and Friday Maggie Petti conducts a challenging two-hour exercise class at The Groves. What makes this exercise class different is the length of the class and the ages of the participants. The youngster in the class is 57 and the oldest is, let's just say, mid-80s.

“I teach people half my own age and they can’t do some of the things these ladies do in this class,” Petti announced at the end of the class.

Petti has taught fitness classes for 20 years and was a dance and gymnastic instructor in New Jersey before she moved to the Tampa area in 2004. For the last seven years, she has been teaching at The Groves.

The class, (did I mention it is two hours), is a mix of some of the more popular exercise techniques such as band resistance training, light weights, Pilates, yoga and cardio routines. Petti also infuses the class with core training, toning, stretching, and always includes warm-up and cool-down exercises to prevent injuries.

The class is designed for seniors to help strengthen muscles and connective tissues while building strong bones. The stretching and yoga exercises help to lengthen muscles and keep joints lubricated in area such as hips, knees and shoulders, which tend to troublesome areas for many seniors. The cardio portion of the class focuses on circulation of the entire body, while improving balance and endurance and strengthening the heart.

There are other obvious benefits that come from this kind of workout regime. Two of the members stated they have lost 20 pounds. Another said her  cholesterol went down by more than 100 points since she started the class.  Still another said she has developed strong relationships with other members through the class.

“They celebrate, support and grieve with one another,” said Petti.

Roberta Tompkins, coordinator of this program said, “No matter where you are, or what age, you can make it your goal to have a healthier body.”

Some of the class members start out slow and build as they increase in endurance. Some stay for only part of the class.

“Maggie keeps the classes fun and moving,” said Tompkins.

The class meets every Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. noon. There is a monthly charge of $25 (flex pay is also available). Wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Bring water and a towel. Stretch bands, weights and mats are available in class.  The class is open to the public. For more information about the class contact Roberta Tompkins 813- 996-1016.
