Library Is Looking For A Few Good Artists

The fourth annual Teen Art Contest is just around the corner and entries are still being accepted.

With cash prizes on the line and a chance to have works judged by professionals, the fourth annual Land O' Lakes Library Teen Art Contest is shaping up to be a memorable one, organizers say.

“We believe supporting the arts, music and cultural endeavors of the community is a good thing,” explained Paul Stonebridge, the library system’s teen services manager. “(We want to provide) a well-rounded cultural experience.”

This, he said, includes making sure teens have plenty of opportunities to express themselves.

The art show is sponsored by the Friends of the Land O’ Lakes Library and the Prodigy Arts. The friends group provides the prizes and Prodigy is bringing the professional judges and is helping to create a “gallery” feel by offering up cheese and crackers and other snacks for participants and viewers, Stonebridge said.

The show will have three different categories: 2-dimensional art, 3-dimensional art and digital/photography. There will be prizes for first through third places in each category. Winners receive $50 for first, $20 for second and $10 for third.

Participation in the annual event is open to youth ages 11 to 18 or in grades six through 12, he said. Judging will not be broken down into age categories, but participants can enter up to five pieces total. Entries must have a participant's name and number on them in a place that's not immediately visible to the judges. This is because entrants can technically win in more than one category, Stonebridge said.

Participants do not have to be present to win.

The library is accepting entries until 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 19. The show gets under way at 6 that night with the winners being announced around 7:45.

Last year's contest had about 200 entries. Stonebridge is hoping for at least that many this year.
