Local Band Doing 'God's Will'

Praising Hymn will perform June 4 at The Shops at Wiregrass.

Praising Hymn is on a mission of sorts.

“We’re a band doing God’s will for music and spirituality,” said Logan Laubach, the group’s rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist.

The Wesley Chapel-based, five-piece has been bringing its brand of Christian rock music to the region for two years. Though they are no longer affiliated with the house of worship, Praising Hymn used to play often at Crossroads Church. They have also performed at Organic Life Coffee in Lutz and the Church Street Christmas event in Dade City.

Their next performance is scheduled for June 4 at the You Nite event hosted by The Shops at Wiregrass. They will play from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Laubach said.

Praising Hymn also consists of lead guitarist Jeff Duncan and his son Joey, the drummer; second vocalist Janell Cunningham; and bassist John Hayford. Laubach said he brings a “concept” of a song to the group, who then add to it and massage it to complete the tune.

“We sing upward and outward,” said Laubach, adding the group is launching a debut album at the end of the summer. “There’s no inward part, no selfishness.”

The band keeps things spiritual and positive. One of their lyrics says, “’Open your mind, heaven is always there. Open your heart, heaven is always there,’” Laubach said.

Jeff Duncan said Praising Hymn has lots in common musically with mainstream rock.

“My influences are Stevie Ray Vaughn, Van Halen,” he said. “That’s where I’m coming from.”

They strive to stand apart, Duncan said.

“Christian music – I don’t really listen to it,” he said. “I don’t want to emulate anything that’s out there.”
