2012 Election Cycle: A Busy Year Ahead

2012-what voters can expect this year!

The 2012 election cycle has begun, and while it promises to be a very hectic year with the Presidential Preference Primary, municipal elections, primary plection and general election, we are also in a year of redistricting which will be in effect for voters beginning with the Primary Election in August. Speaking of the Primary Election currently scheduled for Aug. 14, there is a possibility that during the current Legislative Session which began on January 10, 2012, it may be moved to Aug. 21. Once the date is determined we will be able to move forward with finalizing many details in our preparations. In the meantime, we will begin preparations for the municipal elections in April, and we will know in which cities after candidate qualifying ends on Feb. 21.

Also, we are hopeful and optimistic that the Legislature will quickly vote on proposed redistricting maps and the Governor will sign them as well. Once passed and within 5 days, the Attorney General will petition the Supreme Court which will determine the validity of the plan. Additionally, the Department of Justice has to review the maps for adherence to the Federal Voting Rights Act. Excluding any litigation and once this process in done, my office can finalize the arduous task of re-precincting the entire county. All registered voters will receive new voter information cards prior to the August Primary. The new information cards will be sent in the mail and will show newly assigned representatives for Congress, State Senate, State House, County Commissioner and County School Board members. Additionally, it will show any changes in the voter's precinct number and polling place. Please visit pascovotes.com for more information or call my office at 800-851-8754.
