Daylight Saving Time Ends Sunday, Nov. 6

Be sure to turn your clocks back an hour before you go to bed Saturday to gain an hour of sleep. It's also a good time to check your smoke alarm batteries and make your home safer.

Feel like you could use an extra hour of sleep? This weekend, you'll get your wish.

Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6, so don't forget to turn your clocks back an hour before you go to bed Saturday night to gain an hour of sleep.

Sunday also marks the 24th anniversary of the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery program, sponsored by Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs, who remind you to change and test the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

Home fires kill 500 children ages 14 and younger each year, experts say, and the majority of those occur in homes without working smoke alarms.

According to Pasco County Fire Rescue assistant chief Cynthia Holland, it’s a good idea to replace batteries in both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Holland said this should be done whether batteries are drained or not.

While it might seem wasteful to change batteries that aren’t necessarily out of juice, Holland said the potential benefits are well worth the extra expense.

“It could save a life,” she said.

Holland recommends changing out batteries twice yearly - when Daylight Saving Time starts in the spring and when it ends in the fall.
