Plan your weekends around Pasco's history.

Fall is here, and it’s time to get out and about to enjoy the great weather. And, what better to kick off fall than to take in another fun and exciting weekend of food, fun, and learning about our local history.

With several historically related events planned throughout Pasco County in September, it’s once again time to pack up the kids, the coolers, and head out to some good old-fashioned fun

This week, we highlight the many historically oriented events around the county that everyone, young and old, can enjoy.

  • Pioneer Florida Museum Tractor Pulls

When: Saturday, October 13, 2012, 10a.m.-2p.m.

Cost: Adult- $6.00/ Seniors 55 & Over - $5.00

What: Every month the Pioneer Florida Museum holds their ever popular tractor pull. Bring the kids and your lawn chairs and enjoy watching the stock and super-modified tractors. According to the Pioneer Florida Museum website, weigh in starts at 9:00 a.m., practice pulls run until 12:30 with competition pulls starting at 12:30. The categories are:

- Stock: 1050,1250
- Modified: 1050, 1250
- Youth: 1000 (2 pulls)
- Outlaw: 1050, 1250
- ECONOMY: 1500, 2000

Youth and adult pull classes: $10 per class per day (insurance and release required). Limited camping space for self-sufficient RV's (pullers only)

  • West Pasco Historical Society Regular Meeting:

When: Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 1:00 p.m.

Cost: FREE to the public

What: This month the West Pasco Historical Society presents a DVD entitled Florida: The 27th Star. This approximately 30 minute video covers Florida history from 1821-1845 and was officially sanctioned as part of the Florida Sesquicentennial Celebration.

The movie’s description from Amazon.com says, “Experience the hope and despair of Florida's Territorial Period through the eyes of a contemporary boy. With him, see how the clash of wealthy planters, independent crackers, oppressed blacks, and proud Seminoles contributed to Florida's evolution from a territory to a state.”

 

  • Pioneer Florida Museum “Skirmish at Chipco, A Blue-Grey Confrontation”

When: Saturday & Sunday, October 27-28, 2012, 9a.m.-4p.m.

Where: Pioneer Florida Museum in Dade City

What: The “Skirmish at Chipco” combines fact with fiction to relive the moment in history when the Blue and Grey clashed during the Civil War in Florida. Guests will witness a re-enactment of a fictional skirmish that took place within a few miles of the museum grounds. It’s the story of how the North and South clashed at a key trading crossroad when Florida’s hope for a Civil War victory was hanging by a thread.

According to the Dade City Chamber of Commerce newsletter, “In addition to the afternoon battles, there will be a variety of period activities performed by costumed living historians, on-going traditional craft demonstrations, period music, living history scenarios, and military drills taking place throughout the village and camps located amongst the historic buildings.”
