Doctor's In: Like it or not Gun Control is Coming

New York and Colorado have passed gun regulation. More efforts to address sensible gun policy are coming.

I was very encouraged to note that New York state has passed a significant gun law. It reduces magazine capacities to 7 rounds, continues a ban on assault weapons with added weapon restrictions, requires a five year renewal on handgun licenses, require background checks on all private gun sales, institutes registration of ammunition sellers, and includes mental health provisions.

The unhappy NRA is appealing the law but I doubt it will find success and mainly plays its constituents.

Colorado signed its Gun legislation into law.  The tearful Governor, during the signing, honored the shot and murdered State Prison Official, Tom Clements. Pro gun people claim they will unseat the Governor.  That is to be seen. Bravo Governor!

The U.S. Senate offered its version of Gun Regulation minus an assault weapons ban in order to move it forward.  Over the next few weeks Federal regulations addressing firearms will be in play.

A handful of Sheriffs have suggested they will not support restrictive gun laws.  That plays well to delusional 2nd amendment interpreters but is just so much chest beating.  All law enforcement officers are sworn to uphold the law and those that do not may well face arrest or removal from office.

Anti-gun control activists can only watch and wait as continuing gun control resolutions come forth.  I would suggest they might focus their efforts on prayer that no other Newtown like incidents occur.  The NRA true to form fights all reasonable efforts at sensible gun regulation and may pay a hefty price due to their lack of cooperation in this effort.  The overwhelming majority of Americans are pretty fed up with the antics of the NRA. They are loved by their own.

As far as my own thinking, I doubt an assault weapons ban will come about.  Defining the weapon is fraught with problems.  However restricted magazine capacities makes sense.  By the way has anyone tried to buy bullets lately? Other restrictions I have suggested on previous blogs, I continue to advocate.

All that said, I am very optimistic that Newtown, Aurora, other horrifics, and the several thousand killed by guns since Newtown will drive us closer to sane gun policy.
