RAP River Run Much More Than A 5K

Racing to help the youth of Pasco County is easier than you may think because participating in the RAP River Run in New Port Richey helps to provide hope to troubled youth who so desperately need it.

Some have said that growing up is hard to do and many of us know this is true from experience.

But, this is especially true for teenagers that do not have the support and care they need during these often extremely difficult years.  For Pasco County, these endangered youth are fortunate to be able to turn to the RAP House Shelter in New Port Richey.  The acronym RAP stands for Runaway Alternatives Project and the goal is to accept these troubled teens that have run away from their homes and may have nowhere to turn.  RAP offers a safe haven for homeless and displaced teens by providing basics like food, shelter and much needed crisis counseling.  The program boasts a 90% success rate of reuniting teens with their families or putting them into a better situation than when they arrived.  The program is short-term but is an amazing opportunity for these distressed teens to get their lives back on the right track.

A few scary statistics, as provided by RAP House:

• 1 out of every 7 youth will run away between the ages of 10-17.  It is estimated that there are approximately 2.8 million runaway or “throw away” youth living across the country.

• In Florida there are some 40,000 runaway and missing children reported each year. Most of these are children who have either run away or been asked to leave by parents or guardians.

So, how can you help such a worthy organization that directly helps your community?  Elect to participate in or sponsor the Fifth Annual RAP River Run 5K or Leonard Roe Memorial Fun Run.  All of the proceeds benefit the Youth and Family Alternatives, Inc. which helps to run the RAP House Shelter.  The RAP River Run is Saturday, June 9, 2012 and will be at Sims Park in downtown New Port Richey.

For the runners/walkers of Pasco County the race premiums are excellent: custom designed t-shirt, finisher’s medal, and goodie bags!  Personalized bibs were offered to those registered prior to May 1.  There will even be a vendor expo on race day.

I try to participate in as many races as I can afford, and this program is certainly a cause I am extremely proud to fund.  Supporting programs like these with a day of fun and fitness is great way to start your Saturday and bring your family closer!  Kids are welcome and encouraged to participate in the Fun Run.
