Burgers, Badges And A Good Cause

Pasco Sheriff's deputies will be collecting tips and serving up some food and drinks at the Wesley Chapel Red Robin restaurant all in the name of the Special Olympics

Everyone knows that a law enforcement officer's job is to serve and protect, but today they're just going to serve.

Pasco Sheriff's deputies will put down the handcuffs and instead be carrying serving trays at the Red Robin restaurant in Wesley Chapel and all for a good cause - supporting the Special Olympics.

Ten Pasco deputies will collect tips and help serve guests from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 4 to 8 p.m. March 26 at the Red Robin in The Shops of Wiregrass, 28222 Willet Way.

Meanwhile, law enforcement officers in 35 states will do the same at their local Red Robin restaurants.

Tip-A-Cop is part of the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run  campaign. More than 85,000 law enforcement officers worldwide participate in the torch run campaign, which includes an international series of relay runs and special events like Tip-A-Cop, to help raise money and public awareness for Special Olympics. The torch run campaign is the largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics.  Funds raised go directly to local programs in states or countries where the funds are generated, according to the organization.

Sgt. Michelle March, local coordinator of the event for the sheriff's office, said she expects deputies will only deliver small items to guest tables.

"All of these guys and girls who will be serving have probably never served in their life so it could be hazardous," she joked Thursday. "It's been about 15 years since I held a tray."

She said that's the kind of environment they expect: a fun, light-hearted, laid-back experience for all involved.

"I'm looking forward to it. It's going to be fun," March said. "This way really gets the public involved. The restaurant has been amazing and they're super excited. It's contagious."

This is just one of the many events Pasco deputies participate in supporting Special Olympics, she said.

Deputies won't be in their regular uniforms but instead will be showing their support by wearing Torch Run shirts and their badges will be strung from around their necks, March said.

Red Robin has been supporting Special Olympics programs across the country for the past six years and has helped raise more than $1.5 million for the cause.

Monday through Friday of this week, Red Robin restaurants are donating 50 cents from every burger and Coke product sold to the Special Olympics.

So, hop in the car and make the short trip from the Land O' Lakes area over to Wesley Chapel and enjoy a gourmet burger while contributing to a good cause. Law Enforcement supervisors and Special Olympics representatives and athletes will greet guests at the door.
