Disney Monorail Evacuated After Possible Lightning Strike

Guests at Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Lake Buena Vista got a ride they didn’t count on Sunday evening when a lightning strike reportedly took out the power on the park’s monorail, forcing the evacuation of about 120 people.

Reedy Creek fire officials confirmed that power was lost to the ride around 6 p.m. July 13, according to WESH.com. While park officials reported bad weather in the area, they could not say for sure if the issue was caused by a lightning strike.

News of the evacuation spread across the Internet like wildfire as passengers on the ride began sharing their experience via social media channels.

“Literally stuck on a monorail at disney, lighting struck and we immediately stopped. I'm convinced that I'm going to die,” wrote @nnaaatttalliiie on Twitter.

Fellow Disney-goer @AbbyJohnn also chimed in, “stuck on a monorail at Disney #thankslightning.”

Word that all passengers had been safely evacuated came in shortly after 10 p.m. as people tweeted the news.

“Passengers are finally off of a Disney monorail that was stuck on the track,” @OnlyNikkiBowers tweeted just after 10 p.m.

Disney’s monorail mishap isn’t the first one of its kind to make news in recent months. Back in July, there was an accident on a roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, Calif. That incident left some passengers injured, according to Time.com.

In February, Tampa’s own Busch Gardens had a similar incident when the Cheetah Hunt roller coaster malfunctioned. No one was injured in that case, but 16 people had to be evacuated.
