Highway Patrol Issues Corrected Statement Regarding Fatal May 7 Bicycle Accident

The Florida Highway Patrol has corrected the narrative of events.

In a media release issued tonight, the Florida Highway Patrol revised its statement related to the May 7 death of Jay Comins, 55, of Lutz.

According to the release, the pickup truck driven by Jose Flores, 55, of Hudson was traveling northbound on Dale Mabry Highway around 4:10 p.m. when a bicycle ridden by Comins was traveling westbound on a driveway access road north of County Line Road.

Comins, the report said, left the driveway and moved onto Dale Mabry Highway. When he did, his bicycle went “into the path of the pickup resulting in the right front of the pickup colliding with the left side of the bicycle.”
