Lockdown Lifted at Wesley Chapel High School

A "homemade chemical device" was used to start a fire in an outdoor trash can, officials say.

After an early morning scare, classes have resumed as normal at Wesley Chapel High School.

According to Pasco School District spokeswoman Summer Romagnoli, the school was on a modified lockdown this morning, Feb. 21, after a staff member noticed smoke billowing out of an outdoor trash can.

“As a proactive measure, she immediately placed the school in a modified lockdown and contacted safety officials,” Romagnoli wrote in an email. “Law enforcement has determined that the disruption was caused by a homemade chemical device. They removed the device, checked the entire campus and deemed it safe to resume normal operations.”

No one was injured as a result of the fire, Romagnoli said.

“We will continue to work with law enforcement as they investigate this incident to ensure the continued safety of all students and staff.”
