A 67-year-old Lutz man was injured this afternoon when he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle near Interstate 75 and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard in New Tampa.
According to the Tampa Police Department, Albert Sims Dyson, 67, of Tinker Drive in Lutz was riding his bicycle between Commerce Palms Boulevard and the I-75 south entrance ramp when the crash took place.
Officials say that 23-year-old Stephanie Miller of St. Petersburg applied her brakes but was unable to avoid hitting Dyson who was in the road. He was flown by helicopter to Tampa General Hospital.
Both lanes of I-75 were closed intermittently while the helicopter was flown in to transport the rider to a nearby hospital, police said.
The investigation is ongoing, but police say at this time it appears that the driver is not at fault.
