Name Released In Fatal Bicycle Accident

A 55-year-old Lutz man was killed this afternoon when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a pickup truck on North Dale Mabry Highway.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Jay Comins of Lutz was riding his bicycle on the inside, northbound lane of Dale Mabry when a 1998 Ford Pickup driven by Jose J. Flores, 55, of Hudson pulled out of an access driveway near County Line Road. When the pickup moved onto Dale Mabry, it went into the path of Comins’ bicycles, a highway patrol media release said.

The front right of the bicycle struck the pickup truck, sending the bicycle into the left turn lane on Dale Mabry.

Comins died at the scene of the crash, the release said.

The highway patrol is continuing its investigation and charges are listed as pending.
