Sheriff Aims to Curb Spring Break Crashes, Drug Use

Road patrols, a DUI check and the prevention of synthetic drugs sales are on the agenda.

The time for beaches, bikinis and laying out by the pool with your tanning oil is upon us.

That’s right. Monday marks the beginning of Spring break in Pasco, and it’s the American dream come true for many young people.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco wants to make sure that dream doesn’t turn into a nightmare.

His agency is launching Operation Dry Spring and it will take place from Friday to  April  in conjunction with Pasco’s spring break. The operation seeks to prevent underage drinking drunk driving and illegal drug use.

"Hopefully, we can save a life,” he said.

The Pasco Sheriff’s is teaming up with other agencies for multiple road patrols.  The agency is planning a DUI checkpoint to launch the effort  today, March 23, at 5228 Trouble Creek Rd., New Port Richey.

Deputies will also be monitoring local convenience stores to prevent sale of alcohol to minors and also prevent the sale of synthetic drugs such as Spice.
