Commissioner Going Behind Bars to Help Animals

Pat Mulieri says she'll sit in a dog kennel to help Pasco County Animal Services reach its summer adoption goal. Dogs and cats are free this weekend for those who want to adopt.

Stop by the Pasco County Animal Services shelter this Saturday and you’ll have the chance.

Mulieri said the idea struck her as one that might go over well with residents.

“Hey, a commission in a cage,” she said. “Many people would love this.”

Mulieri doesn’t intend to sit in the kennel alone, however. Her rescue dog Calvin will also be at her side.

Saturday’s event kicks off a weekend of free adoptions at the Land O’ Lakes shelter. People who stop by between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. June 1 and between 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday, June 2, can take home a cat or a dog at no charge.

The goal for summer adoptions is 811. Reaching that number could help the county win the ASPCA’s Rachael Ray $100K Challenge. The winner of that contest gets $100,000 to help with shelter needs.

Animal Services is located at 19640 Dogpatch Lane in Land O’ Lakes.
