Pasco Animal Shelter Opens Again For Adoptions

Wannabe pet owners were turned away recently when a parvovirus outbreak forced the shelter's closing.

Land O’ Lakes residents hoping to give a shelter pet a forever home can once again have their pick of the litter, so to say, at Pasco County Animal Services.

The 19640 Dogpatch Lane shelter in Land O’ Lakes closed down for adoptions last month when a parvovirus outbreak was reported. The shelter is slated to reopen Tuesday, July 23 at noon, according to the county’s website.

Animals exposed to parvovirus can suffer from such symptoms as vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite, according to the county. The shelter’s public adoption area closed down in late June in an effort to contain the virus and make sure the pet population was healthy once again.

The parvo outbreak is the latest turn in a series of problems reported at Animal Services. The agency has recently taken fire for killing a Land O’ Lakes resident’s cat in the field and also saw its director resign after reports of overcrowding and errors with euthanasia were reported.
