Pasco Sheriff Returns $1.5 Million to County

The funds come from unspent budget money and revenue.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco announced Monday that he is returning $1.5 million to the county commission.

Most of the $1.53 million comes from unspent money budgeted for fiscal year 2011, which ended Sept. 30, according to a press release. A little more than $67,000 of the total returned money comes from revenue generated over the fiscal year.

In June, Nocco announced that he would return $1.1 million to the county.

“When budget negotiations began, it turned out to be even more,” said Kevin Doll, a sheriff’s office spokesman.

The sheriff's office returned $1,468,223 in unspent money from its 2011 budget, which was negotiated to total $86.6 million.

About 75 percent of that unspent money is attributed to changes to employer contributions for public employees in the Florida Retirement System.

The sheriff’s office had originally anticipated that it would need to increase its contributions. Because of the change made by the state, which took effect July 1, it actually was able to decrease the contributions.

The rest of the unspent budget money results from lowered or discontinued expenses.

The $67,044 in revenue the sheriff is returning to the county results from fees and sales. Sheriff’s office revenue is required to go back to the county commission.

Nocco's $83.37 million budget for fiscal year 2012, which started Oct. 1, is 3.3 percent less than the 2011 spending plan.
