Romney Energizes Bay Area Crowd

Gov. Mitt Romney spoke about the need for change during his Oct. 27 rally in Pasco County's Land O' Lakes.

Many of those who filled the bleachers and field at former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's rally might say it was the winds of change blowing through the Land O' Lakes High School stadium Saturday.

A cool breeze made the hours-long wait for the Republican presidential candidate's appearance a pleasant one.

People from all over the Bay area and beyond began lining up as early as 2 p.m. to enter the John Benedetto Stadium for Romney's evening appearance.

Saturday was the first day of early voting, and many in the crowd affirmed that they had indeed already voted when asked by Congressman Connie Mack, who introduced Romney to the packed stadium.

He didn’t miss the opportunity to stump for his own campaign for Senate against Democrat Bill Nelson.

“Senator Nelson was the deciding vote for ObamaCare,” Mack said, drawing a "boo" from the crowd.

Those boos for President Barack Obama turned to cheers as Romney took the stage; the crowd packed tightly around his podium in the center of the field.  Most held their phones in the air, snapping photos and video of the presidential hopeful.

Many who weren’t holding phones up had their children on their shoulders to get a better view of what many in attendance felt was a historic moment.

“When we win Florida, we’re going to win the White House,” Romnney told the cheering crowd, drawing chants of “Mitt, Mitt, Mitt” in response.

At President Obama’s rallies, they chant “Four more years,” Romney said. His rally’s chant would be “Ten more days,” he said, joking later they would have to change that tomorrow.

Romney touched on a little bit of everything in his speech, which lasted about 25 minutes: ObamaCare, jobs, small business, education and energy independence among them.

There’s a big cloud hanging over small business right now: ObamaCare,” he said. “We’re going to remove that.”

He also reiterated his disdain for teacher’s unions.

President Obama gets his largest contributions from teachers unions, which oppose school choice, Romney said.

“I want every parent to have the choice of where their child attends school,” he said.

Kids, parents and teachers need to come first, Romney said. “And the union is going to have to go behind.”

Romney also talked numbers: 23 million people out of work, 47 million on food stamps, 2 percent growth rate for the economy.

“If I,” Romney started to say, before stopping to correct himself.

“When I become president,” he said, then paused as chants of “10 more days” erupted from the crowd.

“I will put the interests of the people ahead of the politicians,” he said.

Obama said recently that he can’t change politics from the inside, only from the outside, Romney said.

“We’re gonna give him that chance soon.”

I was not there but spoke to a fellow Republican that attended and this was what he said this morning. A group a of 12 men who attended the rally, Met for coffee afterwards. All of them are Registered Republicans (just like me). The first comment after about a minute of silence was, "so I guess Obama's not that bad after all". After a loud round of laughter the 12 concluded they were going to vote for President Obama. The reasons varied from lying to his pledge to take away birth control but all were sound logical reasons based on his record in office and private business. A little back ground, at the table 2 were Baptist, 3 Catholic, 2 Church of God, 4 Methodist and 1 Atheist. 1 was Black, 1 Cuban, 10 White. All went to Land O Lakes High school, 11 married, 1 gay. All had played football and 10 were small business owners 1 worked for the county and 1 for the state. Interesting group! Real story!

So According to liberals who post here those who vote for Obama are smart & damn those who oppose Obama, well here's a question for everybody when Romney wins this election, what will you do??
Michael D. October 29, 2012 at 05:52 pm
Anti-Liberal,
The fact we have a choice that doesn't matter, I don't believe anyone is saying that. For me it is about correct information, on either side. I have corrected those on either side, with the easily found facts. If Romney wins he will have two years of a Congress of the same party. I will expect the same results or better than the people who expected of Obama with the 4 months he had a majority in Congress. I personally don't think either man is good for America, but that is my opinion. Your opinion is that Romney is better, which is fine. I just prefer that it be about the facts and whole truths. Not half-truths and then opinions sold as truths.

Michael, I have respect for your views, yes I do know about the changes that was made to the pledge in 1954 by President Eisenhover, now this is 2012 yesterday when I posted the pledge it was from the heart, I am a firm believer in God always have, always will, my belief is not up for debate so Michael I hope you have respect for my views for I will always say the Pledge of Allegiance the way I wrote it above!

Romney's version of "Change" is recycling the same NEOcon rinos back into the power structure. Have you seen his proposed cabinet? It mirrors the Bush one............yep, that's some change we are going to get......right back to the insanity of the previous regime.
But hey, it's been working so well for decades now, might as well continue to play the back and forth game with the same two parties. Yep, the people want change all right......to bad the voting masses continue to support the duopoly.

that won't change until another entity gains enough money to get into the game. Which we have yet to see.

Anti-Liberal,
And no one should take away in your belief in God. I don't think anyone has that right to trade your belief. I have many friends that are Christians, Hindi, Buddhist, and all their believes are treasures. I love getting in discussions and learning about them. I believe we were built as a nation of outcasts who grew into this melting pot of culture. It takes all the cultures and religions to make us the great nation we are. So, do not think for any moment I wouldn't say someone should change their firmly held theological believes.

Anti-Liberal...............I know many believe the President has Dictatorial powers.........but that Liberal President isn't the only one in DC causing chaos. Who do you think passes the legislation Obama signs.......only the D's? Nope, the R's are right there with them.
It's the entire system causing problems for the rest of us.........but you want to believe we swing back over to the other side for some different "Change." I hear Romney saying jobs, jobs, jobs. How about freedom!, FREEdom!!, FREEDOM!! FYI: You are pledging allegiance to a cloth that when the red, white and blue is seen coming over a hill, the foreigners run with horror. Rest assured, a Romney administration will definitely lead to more "liberating." God, I love having money stolen from me to kill innocent men, woman and children in foreign lands......................cause these colors don't run!! USA! USA! USA!

The majority of the Romney supporters at his rallies are angry older white voters who have federal Medicare coverage for their health insurance and are receiving Social Security checks from the government. Ironically, they are very angry that Pres. Obama has supported universal health care for all Americans. They are also angry that the federal government sends out checks to other Americans such as poor people who need food and housing assistance. These Romney supporters don't seem to mind that the federal government also greatly assists all American businesses with numerous business tax deductions, government loans, government subsidies, government bailout money, protections under the federal bankruptcy laws, and numerous other state and federal tax breaks. In addition, the current generation of retirees on average will receive much more in Social Security and Medicare benefits than they paid in in federal taxes during their working years. Many of these Romney supporters seem to have no problem receiving government benefits or having our corporations receive these benefits. However, if poor people get government benefits, these people are lazy deadbeats getting benefits because we have a "socialist" president redistributing the country's wealth.

Gary Johnson garners 5% of the national vote and the Libertarian party will have more funds than ever.......of course it will somewhat force them to violate the principles they espouse.
I want Revolutionary change.......not this scratch the surface mumbo jumbo. Deal with the Federal Reserve, Foreign Policy, Entitlements, Civil Rights. Real changes isn't being offered by any of these puppets. You saw what happened when a 3rd person did have enough money......they changed the way candidates are allowed into the debates. Had Perot not done so well, Johnson would be in the debates right now, but they changed the rules...........sorta the same way the RNC changed their rules to put a halt to grass root movements like Dr. Ron Pauls. FYI: under the new rules, Reagan wouldn't have been President. But hey, that's Freedom in America. (there's rumors Perot and his family were threatened, hence his withdrawal). If only the people listened to Perot...........just like people should be listening to Dr. Paul) www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rkgx1C_S6ls

The 5% is what I was referring to. There needs to be multiple voices to actually represent the social culture in this country. Currently we have two sides of the same coin. Seperated by minor differences.

Lynda, my liberal friends are the ones talking to me. I need not seek out political conversation in this state, it's everywhere, and people are in deep distress over their political leanings vs common sense being diametrically opposed. There minds are blown. I know union guys that have been laid off for 2 years and they are going to vote for Elizabeth Warren, but they'll be damned if they get sucked into voting for an imcompetent snake-oil salesman again. And they are not shy about letting their opinions known. Nobody believes a word that comes out of the President's mouth anymore. As far as your random comment of "knowing people like me", which sounds dangerously close to "you people" a phrase that "tolerant" liberals foam at that mouth when they hear, I have nothing to add to that.
Freedom October 29, 2012 at 07:51 pm

Michael D. October 29, 2012 at 07:54 pm
There are those "tolerant" people on both sides Bob. Romney is just as much of a "snake-oil" salesmen. Both candidates will say what their focus groups tell them to in order to get elected.
Michael D. October 29, 2012 at 07:58 pm
Yes, there is extremes on both sides. I took the gun toting one as a joke to something you had said in good nature, but the other other statements or just an ignorant as the ones that do it on the side. People are allowed their opinion, but as long as their is intelligent debate I have no issue. Unfortunitely both sides have ignorant morons.

More personal attacks from liberals;
Lynda 10:05 am on Thursday, October 25, 2012 At the risk of adding myself to the "legal action" Anti-Liberal contemplates, is anyone else seriously worried (as I am) about her mental stability? The posts last night just got more and more strange. I know a lot of this discussion is exchanging witty--at least in our opinion--remarks, but part of that means doing so with people equally "armed". I have enormous admiration for Joe C and Rick Brasso for their persistence in correcting misinformation and putting forth clear ideas as well as being clever while doing so. I really look forward to their posts. I must admit to just too much irritation at the misinformation and outright lies to reply to the constant purposeful inflammatory comments as well as they do. I just think Anti-liberal appears to be at actual risk right now. I don't know if Patch does interventions, but this is a troubling situation. No one should have or should put their mental well-being in danger for the sake of an on-line discussion. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- rick barasso 10:47 am on Thursday, October 25, 2012 Thank you Lynda. I do whole heartedly try to convey the truth, occasionally with a sense of humor. I believe your statements about AL are not without merit. Hopefully they will take a breath, and appreciate that others have an opinion too. And that's some of those opinions are actually based on facts.
Freedom October 29, 2012 at 08:27 pm
Yes Michael there are extremes on both sides however most of these personal attacks not all was directed at me, I didn't deserve it, I am a decent & honest citizen, at the risk of certain people gloating, I have feelings & I have cried especially at being called a racist & paranoid schizo, I am sure you will agree that it is cruel & uncalled for!
Michael D. October 29, 2012 at 08:43 pm
when it comes to name calling it is never called for. The labeling on both sides is pretty ridiculous.
Freedom October 29, 2012 at 09:25 pm
Hey Michael, you remember the post on Laundry Mat in Dunedin, I signed up with Patch during that post, when I read about the sign, I felt the wording was crude, my view is 2 wrongs don't make a right, foul language has no place in any conversation & that goes for all sides!
bob cushman October 29, 2012 at 11:40 pm
I will not dispute what you say, Mike, except to point out that this is what has been getting people elected since Andrew Jackson won his first term. James Michael Curley springs to the mind of this Bostonian. But both of these consumate politicians had accomplishments popular amongst the electorate to point to as viable reasons to pull the lever on their behalf again. Not the case here. And I agree with euphemizing "tolerant".
Michael D. October 30, 2012 at 01:02 pm
Bob,
I think this statement you made is where I have the problem "This is what has been getting people elected". Very valid point, the candidate who has spent the most money campaign has won the last 80 years at least. What does that say about our voting public that we are easily swayed by candidates who will change their tune on a dime. Because of their focus groups. Why do we only hear two voices as well? Are we to truly believe that only 2 men represent what 312.8 Million People? No other voices are out there?
bob cushman October 30, 2012 at 01:28 pm
Thanks, Michael, but I have no interest in breaking down the inadequacies of the two-party system, nor in denigrating the intelligence of the American voter. It is, however, quite interesting that both of these, uh, "issues", seem to be of paramount importance to you a mere week before an election that is clearly slipping through the incumbant's fingers.
Michael D. October 30, 2012 at 01:33 pm
Bob,
Check my history, I have been saying it for months. Even on the debate boards asking why another voice isn't being heard. As I have said multiple times over the last few months, I don't find either of these two candidates speaking for me.
bob cushman October 30, 2012 at 01:38 pm
....but I do thank you for your obvious civility and appreciate the well-mannered responses.
