Land O' Lakes Schools Celebrated Dr. Seuss' Birthday In Style

Members of the Pasco County Reading Council celebrated the famous author's birthday by taking part in Read Across America.

Excited children and funny-hat wearing adults converged on the Land O' Lakes March 2 to recognize the birthday of Dr. Seuss. As part of Read Across America, the event was designed to promote literacy and a passion for learning.

"We just want to inspire a love of reading," said Kim Rives, a member of the Pasco County Reading Council and the literacy coach at . "It's important."

Members of the council were on hand to read aloud to McDonald's younger patrons. They also gave away balloons, offered free face painting and more. Key to the event was a free book for every child who listened to a story read by a guest reader. Volunteer readers represented a number of area elementary schools.

The council paid for the books, Rives said.

The idea behind the book giveaway is to encourage family reading time, Rives said.

"It's a nice shared family thing you can do," she said, adding that parents and children of any age can benefit from doing so.
