Land O’ Lakes, Sunlake Earn B Grades from the State

Eighty-five percent of Pasco's high schools earned A or B grades.

When the Florida Department of Education released grades for high schools today, Pasco County found reason to celebrate.

Eleven of its 13 high schools earned A or B grades from the state Department of Education. That’s 85 percent of Pasco’s high schools— a number that tops the state average of 78 percent.

Ten out of 12 of the county’s high schools maintained or improved their grades. Two schools—Anclote and Hudson—dramatically increased their grades. Anclote went from an F grade to an A. Hudson climbed from a D to a B.

“These improved results are a reflection of the dedication and commitment of each member of our entire team,” said Superintendent Heather Fiorentino.  “We are extremely proud of our schools that have made significant progress in ensuring that all students graduate prepared for success.  Our schools continue to excel in the face of adversity, which is a testament to the resilience, hard work and skill level of our amazing team of educators.”

Both Land O’ Lakes area high schools earned B grades from the state.

For Land O’ Lakes High School, the grade is a drop over last year’s A. That school earned solid B's in 2008-09 and 2007-08. It held A grades from the 2004-05 school year through the 2008-09 school year.

Meanwhile, Sunlake has maintained a B grade since the first year it was graded by the state in 2007-08.

Six schools within the county earned A grades. They are Pasco, Wesley Chapel, J.W. Mitchell, Wiregrass Ranch, River Ridge and Anclote.

This year’s school grades were based on more than FCAT results. According to Summer Romagnoli, Pasco’s school district spokeswoman, the state’s grading formula includes such factors as assessment data, participation in accelerated courses and graduation rates.
