Update: Pasco School Closing Decision Coming Later Today

The school district is one of the few in the Tampa Bay area that still officially plans to open tomorrow.

Update 2:19 p.m. Aug. 26: Pasco County Schools spokeswoman Summer Romagnoli said the district is waiting for a 3:30 p.m. briefing to make a final decision.

Earlier:

Pasco County students and parents who have been waiting to hear if schools will open tomorrow have to wait a little longer.

According to the Gulf High School website, a decision isn’t expected until sometime after 4:30 p.m. Both Pinellas and Hillsborough counties have suspended classes for tomorrow as Tropical Storm Isaac makes its way into the Gulf of Mexico.

The latest track reports show the storm shifting west as it gains strength, but the entire Tampa Bay region remains under a tropical storm warning.

Do you think Pasco should cancel classes tomorrow? Will you keep your kids home if schools are open? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

Stay with Patch for updates as they become available.

I don't think it's our decision if schools are open or not. A lot of information goes into making a decision like that, and I'm sure the school board will do what is best for our childrens' safety.

Since the other counties in our area are already closed tomorrow, it would be really nice if Pasco could make an early decision so that parents could prepare for Monday. We are not all going to be able to stay home (due to work), so time for preparations in necessary. Also, are we not always trying to keep what is best for the students in mind? They will be scared tomorrow, and their teachers have families as well!!!

Schools should be probably closed tomorrow since there are predictions for heavy rain and squalls. The ground is already saturated and there will definitely be a tremendous amount of flooding.

My kids are staying home eather way because I don't want them to go to school then not be able to get home because of the storms and rain

Closing schools seems a bit much for a storm that isn't expected to hit us with much more than some rain. Unless Isaac takes a quick right turn, I think they should leave classes open.

It's Past 3:30, has a decision been made?

I agree floding in pasco almost always happens and with all the rain we have had already what they thinking not to mention the people that have to make arrangements at the last minute or have to make arrangements after the streets are flooded and they can't get home there is no reason the decision has not been made already

We really need to know ASAP so plans can be made for the kids...

I do not think school should be open due to flooding already in pasco. What happens if u get your child there and can't get them home? what is the risk worth.

4:00 and still waiting...
David August 26, 2012 at 08:01 PM
The Sheriffs office is reporting Pasco County schools are closed on Monday due to the storm...

I hope we are NOT the only county open tomorrow. We are not going to be hit with just rain....we are on the outer bands which will throw tornadoes left and right! I do not want to go out in that whatsoever! Nor should all of the kiddos and be in duck and cover all day! HELLO Pasco get your act together....CLOSE THE SCHOOLS PLEASE!

You can always make a back up plan for your kids that way you are prepared either way. Post did say they would make a decision after 4:30 and it is only 4.

A few more inches of rain, and it won't matter anyways - because we won't be able to make it school.
Jennica August 26, 2012 at 08:05 PM
I really hope they close the schools. Getting drenched in the rain and worrying about my family back at home is not something I plan on doing.

I am a student at Zephyrhills High school, and I have seen the way kids act when its raining. There is a lot of slipping and falling accidents when it rains. And some areas of the school flood causing panic for students. They should close and I'm not just saying that to get out of school. When the power goes out, no learning gets done and it gets really hot really fast.

Even Hernando county had the good sense to close for tomorrow. From posts above, whoever spoke about the already saturated ground and tropical storm conditions tomorrow there will be Pasco employees going to work, not all of whom have children who attend Pasco schools, so they will left home alone with flooding everywhere, and possibilities of tornadoes?!?! Hillsborough AND the county above Pasco decided to error on the side of caution. P.S. I've just learned that EVEN POLK county schools will be closed tomorrow. What is Pasco trying to prove?
Black Dog August 26, 2012 at 08:38 PM
Agreed, and nice point!
ChillyNeil August 26, 2012 at 08:43 PM
Pasco is required to have flood insurance and for the same reason, school precautions should be equal or greater than insurance issues. If there are too many closures, it is acceptable to extend the last day of school.
Black Dog August 26, 2012 at 08:48 PM
Bay news 9 says Pasco is closed. Wait for your phone calls everyone. Be safe
ChillyNeil August 26, 2012 at 08:52 PM
http://www.pascocountyfl.net/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=250 its officially closed tomorrow, along with ALL county offices and public transit

I don't feel that it is the school boards decision in sending our children to school in these bad conditions.. I am the father of 4 grown children and am rearing my 4 year old grandson.. He is in pre-k and from what I was told about the classroom he is in, during Debby, his classroom was flooded and with damage.. I know he will stay home tomorrow..
