Pasco Schools' Food, Nutrition Department Garners USDA Award

The district's snack pack program earns the district accolades.

To increase student participation in the Pasco Schools’ breakfast program, Food and Nutrition Department staff came up with an idea: the snack pack.

And they recently were recognized nationally for their creativity.

Pasco School’s Food and Nutrition Department was selected for an award in the USDA’s 19th annual Best Practices Awards in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), School Breakfast Program (SBP) and Food Distribution Program (FDP).

“Breakfast was rebranded as a snack because students were not participating in late starting schools and many students stated that they had already eaten.  The Snack Pack Program combined nontraditional breakfast items that met reimbursement standards.  The simple and non-messy components are now served as an alternative to the traditional breakfast,” according to district officials.

Participation in the breakfast program has increased by 5 percent across the Pasco district, a Food and Nutrition Department representative told the school board at its Dec. 4 meeting.
