Ice Hockey Team Heads to National Championship

The Scorpions, with players hailing from Lutz and Wesley Chapel to Brandon and beyond, hope to bring the title home to the sunshine state.

The Tampa Scorpions Peewee AA '99 ice hockey team will travel to Washington this week to represent Florida in the USA Hockey National Championship.

The Scorpions—made up of players from all over the Bay area, including Wesley Chapel and Lutz—competed against the top six teams to win the state championship in February.  The Scorpions allowed only five goals during the entire tournament. That win clinched their position in the national tournament, which begins March 28.

The team currently is ranked No. 16 in the nation, which places them in the elite bracket for nationals.

"Each one of these young boys would be honored to have the support of their community behind them. They have the talent to bring a National Championship home to Tampa, Florida," team parent Janet Kromer of Wesley Chapel said in an email.

Editor's Note: My son, Hunter Sipperley, 13, is among the players headed to nationals this week, so it's not without a bit of pride (and prejudice) that I share this with you. Go Scorpions! ~Keli
