Ode to My Tupperware Lid

Choosing to remember and reflect on one of life's simple pleasures.

For 23 years, you've served me well. As a young and undomesticated bride-to-be, I did not understand the importance of something so simple for the kitchen. I had no idea when a special someone gifted you and your set to me at my wedding shower what a blessing you would be. I would have certainly sat in disbelief if anyone tried to convince me how helpful you would be over the years. As I ponder my time with you, I reflect on some of the more memorable times.

You have protected precious meatballs made with love by my mother-in-law. Having tasted them so many times, I finally said “Please, show me how to make these.” It was a day that I will always hold near to my heart because it was a time to blend family and share secrets. You have kept summer salads crisp and never allowed the lettuce to go limp.  I think often of the days my family has spent weeding, planting, and picking just-ripened vegetables for you to hold. I treasure those days when we work on a project together. I thank you for extending the life of Christmas dinner leftovers, and remember you filled to the top with Aunt Kathy’s special potato concoction. I am thankful for Aunt Kathy because she is also my dear friend who chose to give me you as a present so many years ago.  She is one smart cookie and has been using friends like you for many years herself. You have frequently accepted my over-calculated recipes with open bowl. I recall more than one overflowing coleslaw that had nowhere else to go. I am thankful for family get-togethers and picnics with friends. You have been to many of them, and sat quietly while we shared a meal from you.

So often, you have graciously accepted when I pushed you aside for a different size container, allowed me to stack stuff above and beneath you, dropped you, and survived no less than 9 dishwashers. Yes, we have moved a lot, but you have moved with us as well because you have been needed. You have been part of the family. You’ve been there for me on regular days, birthday, holidays, and just sat patiently waiting for me to use you at my whim.  You are one of life’s simple pleasures, and now today I realize how easy it has been to take you for granted. The day has come, and your job is done. Know that the other three (blue, gray, and green) will carry on. RIP, Pink Lid…you did well!
