One of the original engines that answered the call to the World Trade Center towers during 9/11 is on display at Pasco County Fire Station 37 in Land O' Lakes.
All gave some, some gave all. So goes the adage. Pasco County Fire Station 37 has the honor of hosting Rescue 5, one of the original rescue trucks than answered the call to the World Trade Center during 9/11. Rescue 4 and Rescue 5 engines were so badly damaged after the disaster that they were planed to be used for scrap. Rescue 4 and 5 were acquired by a group of firefighters and restored. They are now the only fire apparatus from 9/11 outside of New York City. They are currently on a national tour to promote 9/11 education and remembrance of firefighters. There were 12 firefighters aboard Rescue 5 when it raced to the burning buildings during 9/11. Only one of them survived. The sole survivor, Bill Spade, penned an account of the events …

Photographs from Patch sites throughout the U.S. show Americans coming together to remember.
How are you commemorating Sept. 11? Add your photos to our gallery of images from Patch sites across the country.
As the country heals in part by helping others, we hope these stories from across the country will inspire you as we mark the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
On the eleventh anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, people across the nation are honoring this Day of Remembrance in their communities and social networks, hosting community food drives, posting photos, sharing their thoughts and paying tribute to victims and first responders—many of whom gave their own lives that day. In his Huffington Post blog, David Pain, president and cofounder of MyGoodDeed, writes: "...On the 11th anniversary of 9/11, despite the years that have passed, the fact that bin Laden is dead, the 9/11 Memorial completed, and the Freedom Tower now many stories high, America is remembering. They are doing it in a remarkable way. By performing good deeds that help others." We'd like to share with you stories from …

Horns honked and motorists waved as members of the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club stood on State Road 54 early Sunday morning waving flags in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The women turned out to let passersby know they “would never forget.” A little further down the road, more than 300 motorcyclists gathered for Gratitude Ride 2011. The 65-mile ride began in Land O’ Lakes at the corner of State Road 54 and U.S. 41. Participants rode down U.S. 41 to Ehren Cutoff and State Road 52 before heading on to Bellamy, Blanton and other stops along the way. The ride eventually wrapped up at Hungry Harry’s in Land O’ Lakes, where a judged bike show took place and participants had their fill of barbecue. Back …

It was the last day of a four-day trip for Northwest pilot Capt. Buzz Allsup. The skies were blue and clear over most of the United States. It was a great day to be flying ... that is, until 8:46 a.m., when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. A few minutes later, Allsup was preparing to leave Las Vegas headed to Detroit with a full plane: 150 passengers, and five on-board crewmembers. It was a grounds crewmember that first told him that a plane had crashed into the tower. Neither Allsup nor anyone else knew anything more. So when he was cleared to “push-back” from the gate, Allsup took off. About 20 minutes into the flight he received a text message from an on-board message…

It was 10 years ago today that Bruce Rubin stood watching as the second plane hit the Word Trade Center in New York. “I felt like I’d been shot,” said Bruce. “I remember thinking we’re at war.” What came next, we all remember. For Bruce it is still clear in his mind and senses some 10 years after the 2001 terrorist attacks. “After the towers collapsed, the remains looked like a 20-foot-high pancake,” Bruce said. The city Bruce had grown up in was unrecognizable. “What struck me most was the smell,” Bruce recalls. “It smelled liked overcooked meat.” Bruce and his wife, Heidi, live in Connerton and are owners of Sun Coast Roofers in Land O’ Lakes. But in 2001, they were living in a brownstone in Brooklyn with a picture window that …

How do teachers cover the events of 9/11?
While most, if not all, adults remember where they were on Sept. 11, 2001, many schoolchildren have few memories, if any. Today's middle school students were too young to remember such a tragic event. They would have been 2, 3, or 4 years old. Others weren't even born yet. So how do schools teach or cover the 10th anniversary of history that they lived through? How do elementary teachers explain it to those born after the event without creating too much fear? Anjanette Todd, a guidance counselor at Pine View Elementary School, said that because there are so many replays on television, it is a topic that her students are familiar with, but it is usually left to them to bring up for discussion. This year, with the 10th anniversary of the …

The 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks will not pass without local observances to mark the occasion. Both the GFWC Lutz-Pasco Junior Woman’s Club and the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club have events planned. Lutz-Pasco Women Plan to Get Active The junior woman’s club plans to kick off a brand new community service project this Sunday, Sept. 11. The group of 20 or so women ages 18 and older is planning to take over care of the Lutz Veteran’s Service Memorial Park, 98 First Ave. S.W. The memorial commemorates lives lost in service to America from the different military branches. It also honors law enforcement officers and firefighters. “I think it’s so important that we recognize (them),” said Sharon Grace, the club’s …

When the Twin Towers fell in New York City and a plane went down in Shanksville, PA, on Sept. 11, 2001, it was hard to find an American who was not affected by the tragedy. From Los Angeles and Houston to Boston and Land O’ Lakes, many who witnessed the terrorist attacks on television or in person were profoundly changed that day. With the 10th anniversary of the attacks coming up in a few days, we at Land O’ Lakes Patch would like to commemorate the tragedy by telling your stories of hope, courage, outrage, loss or action. If you lost a loved one, decided to join the military, marched in a protest, became a volunteer or did something else because of the events of Sept. 11 you have a story to tell — and we want to help you tell it. While …
