Students Showcase Desserts, Compete for Royal Accolades

Sample the creations of culinary arts students as they compete for the title of 'Cinderella's Favorite Dessert' on Thursday, Jan. 17.

In the mood for something sweet? You can get a taste of the action that happens in Pasco County schools' culinary arts program and make a difference at the same time. Students will compete for the title of "Cinderella's Favorite Dessert" on Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Academy of Culinary Arts at Land O' Lakes High School. Local "celebrity" judges will determine who is crowned, and the winning team will have their creation showcased at the Pasco Education Foundation's upcoming Cinderella Ball, according to a foundation press release. Dessert viewing begins at 5 p.m.; judging begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 and available at the door. Culinary Institute Set to Open Aug. 22

The new academy program will prepare students for futures in the food service industry.

While workers rush around tending to last-minute details, Land O’ Lakes High School Principal Ric Mellin is confident the new $5 million Academy of Culinary Arts will be ready for students when they return to classes Aug. 22. “(It’s) 97 percent done and still on track” to open on time, Mellin said last week. So far, the academy has had nearly 70 youth sign up to be “pure academy” students as freshmen. Another 100 or so students are expected to also use the new facility for advanced culinary classes and food and nutrition courses. Mellin expects the numbers to grow as word about the program continues to spread. The institute is a freestanding building constructed in front of Land O’ Lakes High School.
