Author Looking for Help Launching Series Teaching Sign Language

Kentrell Martin wants to produce a book series that will help children learn American Sign Language.

Kentrell Martin learned to communicate in sign language as a child. Now, he’s working on a project to help others learn to sign. Martin, a Land O’ Lakes resident, wants to create a series of books and DVDs called “Shelly’s Adventures” that focus on teaching American Sign Language. The books are geared toward kids. He ultimately wants to adapt the stories intIo a cartoon series andalso a live action series. Martin, 30, is self-publishing the book series and has launched a campaign on Kickstarter to help cover the cost of producing the first two books and the two accompanying DVDs.  Kickstarter is a “crowdfunding” website where people can pledge money to projects they support.  The goal for Martin’s project is to raise $5,000. Sunlake ASL Students Interpret 'West Side Story'

Interpreting the show was one of several events the ASL program does each year for the community.

Sunlake High School American Sign Language students interpreted a recent production of "West Side Story," which was performed at Wesley Chapel High School. The production wrapped up with its final show on Sunday, Feb. 26. "We spent January and February learning our parts and observing the drama practices to put on the show," Sunlake High ASL teacher Rhonda Leslie wrote in an email. "It takes hours working and tweaking this presentation, the songs and the staging. Our desire to is make our community more 'ASL friendly' and allow people to see more public events done in ASL," Leslie said. “Interpreting for the West Side Story was a great experience for me. I just start to learn ASL recently, I am hard of hearing. I can sign some simple words now. I joined a great deaf dating site, deafmatching,com, and met some good deaf/HOH friends over there. They help me to learn ASL.   more ›

Sunlake Dramahawks Perform 'Grease'

Three performances planned at the Center for the Arts at Wesley Chapel High School.

The Sunlake High School Dramahawks will perform their biggest play ever at the Center for the Arts at Wesley Chapel High School this weekend. The students are set to perform “Grease” Feb. 25 at 7 p.m., Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $5 a person and seating is general admission. Tickets are still available and will go on sale one hour before the play starts and doors open 30 minutes before. Carla Nolan, drama director, said she wanted to put on “Grease” because it is something everyone knows. Shelly Roswell also helped direct the play. “We chose ‘Grease’ to try to make a big splash,” Nolan said. “It is also great because we can get such a large cast and crew.
