Newly installed superintendent Kurt Browning said the district is 34th out of 67 school districts — and that must improve.
Pasco County is currently ranked 34th out of 67 school districts — and new School Superintendent Kurt Browning said he is not content with being average. “You’re looking at the face of a very unhappy superintendent,” he said during a speech before the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce Wednesday. “I’ve never been happy with mediocre.” The only way to move the district forward, Browning said, is to make “radical changes.” Browning said his staff knows never to tell him that something is done a certain way in the district because that’s the way it’s always been. Since Browning’s swearing in in November, the district has reduced the number of assistant superintendents from four to two and has done away with the structure of segregating the …

Kurt Browning plans to address the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce April 10.
Land O’ Lakes business owners hoping to find out what’s happening in Pasco County schools will soon get their chance. Pasco School Superintendent Kurt Browning is the guest speaker during the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce’s April 10 general membership meeting. While the focus of Browning’s address hasn’t been released, the Pasco County School District is facing a $23 million shortfall as it prepares its 2013-14 budget. The district has worked through multi-million-dollar budget shortfalls for the past few years and has had to lay off employees in the past to close the gaps. Browning was elected to the superintendent’s post in 2012 following a victory over longtime superintendent Heather Fiorentino. The chamber’s April 10 meeting starts…

Oakes: Where once a frozen firefighter from Michigan seeking annual respite from the chill of winter, Pasco County's population increased by one Baby Boomer in 2004 when my dream to one day retire here became a reality. I love Pasco County and have been a community activist and volunteer here for eight years in various capacities. Currently I'm helping the chamber and county promote international tourism. I'm a …

The Pasco County Commission commended the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce for its efforts to get residents to “Shop Local First.”
The Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce’s efforts to raise awareness about local businesses got a shot in the arm recently thanks to the Pasco County Commission. During their regular board meeting Feb. 19, commissioners issued a resolution commending the chamber for launching a Shop Local campaign. That campaign is meant to encourage residents to look locally first for the items and services they need to buy. By doing so, local consumers can help businesses in their own communities while bolstering services throughout the county with funding provided through sales tax dollars, commissioners pointed out. “I’d just like to applaud you on this program,” Commissioner Jack Mariano told a group from the Central Pasco Chamber who attended Tuesday’s…

There are still sponsorship opportunities and tickets available for the Feb. 1 event, which benefits the Central Pasco Chamber at the Wounded Warrior Project.
Looking for something different to do this weekend? Pull out your fanciest frocks, grab a mask and head to the Masquerade Ball on Friday. Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce honorary mayor candidate Lisa Rogers and her team have been hard at work planning the evening of glamour, which will feature everything from salsa lessons and a costume contest to silent auctions. "There are going to be big things," Rogers said, including an opportunity to win a package that includes priority seating at an upcoming Dr. Phil show, a studio tour and more, donated for the cause by Ierna's Heating and Coooling. Fellow chamber member Charlene Ierna "has been instrumental in guiding me," Rogers said. The planning and campaign have been a challenge, but if …

Honorary mayor candidate Lisa Rogers will host the event on Friday, Feb. 1.
What’s a mother of six kids do to get more involved in the community? If that mom is Lisa Rogers of Land O' Lakes, she runs for honorary mayor and has a ball. A masquerade ball, that is. The Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce honorary mayor candidate will play host to masked revelers on Friday, Feb. 1. “The crowd will be a mix of professionals looking to network and people just looking for a great party, “ Rogers said. Proceeds from the event will benefit the chamber, with 10 percent of going to Roger’s charity of choice, The Wounded Warrior Project. Both the chamber and her chosen charity are special to her, Rogers said. “The chamber has helped me to blossom as an individual as well as a small business owner and I wanted a chance to be …

Maybe there are some "radical changes" needed. Maybe our students are " educationally lazy." Maybe our district rating is mostly due to demographics and socioeconomics. Maybe there is too much emphasis in standardized testing. But maybe just maybe Mr. Browning should actually visit some schools. Sit in a few classrooms. Sample the school cafeteria food. Have a few informal meetings with groups of…   more ›
