Can You Name a Possum?

East-West Animal Hospital in nearby Lutz has a new resident and it’s hoping to give the critter a name selected by its Facebook fans.

Barley the Awesome Possum is a local celebrity by all counts. He’s been featured in videos. Has had his name in headlines. And, he’s even helped raise money for a good cause. Now the resident “star” at East-West Animal Hospital in nearby Lutz has a little shadow. Employees at the 1524 Land O’ Lakes Blvd. animal hospital came across a baby possum in need of a home and some special care not too long ago. While the hope is to rehabilitate the little guy and return him to the wild, Dennis Costantino, the hospital’s spokesman, is trying to make sure he has a name before he goes. To that end, Costantino has asked the hospital’s Facebook fans to suggest names. Right now, Opie and Hops (to go along with Barley) are in the running, but more ideas …

Barley the Awesome Possum Celebrates the Big 1

A free party for the lovable marsupial will feature pizza, cake and lots of door prizes and raffles to raise money for wildlife rescue organizations.

He's sweet, cuddly, and loves cottage cheese. He's Barley the Awesome Possum, and you're invited to his birthday party. Though most people couldn't imagine having a possum as a pet, Lea Murray, a registered veterinary technician at East-West Animal Hospital, couldn't imagine life without her special possum, Barley. Murray adopted Barley after he was the sole survivor of an accident that killed his mother and siblings. Since he was young and suffered from metabolic bone disease, Murray filed to get a permit to make Barley a permanent part of her home. Barley even sleeps with her, Murray said. You can't just make a possum a pet, you have to have a permit, which requires specific circumstances and special care for the animal, Murray said. …

Rescue Kitten Surviving Fine with 1 Kidney

A botched surgical procedure left the little feline with kidney damage, vets say.

Just look at Hermione and it’s hard to tell she had to undergo lifesaving surgery about a week ago. She’s a tiny black cat with plenty of spunk who loves to play and simply refuses to let a few stitches keep her down. Despite appearances, the veterinarians at East-West Animal Hospital say the 4-month-old feline was very sick and now faces a lifetime of special medical concerns. “When she was spayed, the ureter got tied off,” explained Dr. Linda Register. Hermione was brought to East-West about a month ago by a rescue group that found her outside a Bay area PetSmart, Register said. The kitten had been spayed, but no owners could be found. The group hoped the staff at East-West would be able to help the little kitten find a home, Register …
