They Run In When Others Run Out

The Land O’ Lakes Volunteer Fire Department is looking for new recruits.

They could spend their spare time relaxing. That’s just not in their blood, but firefighting is. The people at the Land O’ Lakes Volunteer Fire Department say they’re in it to give back, help the community and even to build careers. “It’s a passion,” explained volunteer Rob Nicholson. “I’ve wanted to be a firefighter since I was 4 years old and my dad took me to a car fire.” Nicholson became a firefighting Explorer, which is a coed program sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America, when he was 13. Now in his 30s, he continues to volunteer. For volunteer Chief Gene Wright, firefighting has also been a life-long passion. “It definitely is in your blood,” said the 65-year-old. Skaters Say Fire And Wood Was 'Sick'

An overview of the Fire and Wood Sk8Boarding Winter Competition held Saturday Jan. 29.

Skateboarders from all over the Tampa Bay area turned out to show off their tricks and vie for prizes in the first ever Fire and Wood Winter Sk8Boarding Competition Jan. 29. Held at the Land O' Lakes Skate Park, the first-ever event was sponsored by the Pasco County Professional Firefighters Local 4420, the Ian Tilmann Foundation and the skate park. The nonprofit foundation promotes skating safety and offers free helmets to prevent injury. About 50 registered contestants participated in the event and even more than that turned out to watch, support the cause and soak up the sunshine on what many described as "a perfect day." A couple of local sponsored Westside Skate Shop skateboarders, Jimmy Mastrocolo and Matt Benevides had a “sick” time…
