Gators Say Goodbye to Benedetto

Friends, family, former students and colleagues gathered May 2 to honor the memory of Land O' Lakes High School football Coach John Benedetto.

John Benedetto is gone, but friends, family and former students made it clear last night, May 2, that he's certainly not forgotten. The Celebration of Coach Benedetto's Life held at Ukulele Brands was meant to honor the former Land O' Lakes High School head football coach and the impact he had on the community during the 30-plus years he served it. If the standing-room-only crowd at the eatery was any indication, Benedetto's impact on Land O' Lakes was huge. "He loved everybody and they loved him," explained Al Claggett, who coached the Gators alongside Benedetto for years. "He (Benedetto) made sure they understood that." "He did a lot of things for a lot of people," added Doug Hutchinson, who has served as a Land O' Lakes High booster for…

Gators Falls to Hernando

The Class 6A-District 6 win went to Brooksville Hernando 28-7.

The Gators had three major players back in time for Friday’s game, but that wasn’t enough to help them take a win over the Brooksville Hernando Leopards. The visiting team took a 28-7 victory over the Gators in the Swamp, according to The Tampa Tribune. Shadow Williams, Kent Taylor and Jordan Michelson all returned to play in time for the Sept. 23 game, but Hernando came out strong with seven points added to the board in the first quarter, seven in the second and 14 in the fourth. The Gator’s sole touchdown came in the second quarter, the Tribune reported. Next up for the Gators, 1-2, is Springstead on Sept. 30. That school fell to Sunlake 49-16 during the Seahawks’ homecoming game Sept. 23.

Gators Romped by Pirates in Classic Rivalry

The Land O' Lakes Gators were toppled by the Pasco Pirates 39-6 on Friday during the rivalry's 36th meeting.

The rain on Friday night ceased just in time for the kickoff to one of the oldest standing rivalries in Pasco County: the Land O ’Lakes Gators and Pasco Pirates. That rivalry began in 1976, and 36 years later it's as bitter as ever. On Sept. 9, the Pirates did something that neither team had done in the history of the rivalry, and that’s extend its winning streak to five games in five years as they cruised by the Gators, 39-6. Both Pasco (2-0) and Land O’ Lakes held four-game win streaks in the past. The Gators only points of the night came in the first half, when quarterback Ryan Bird (12-24 177-yards 1TD, 1INT), found a wide-open Nico Watts for a 60-yard touchdown, but a missed extra point left Land O’ Lakes trailing by one-point going …

Gators are Ready to Take on Zephyrhills

The Land O' Lakes team travels to the home of the Bulldogs on Friday, Sept. 2.

Fresh from a 36-0 preseason victory over Anclote, the Land O' Lakes Gators are preparing for their regular season opener against Zephyrhills this Friday, Sept. 2. The Gators are short standout tight end Kent Taylor, according to The Tampa Tribune. Taylor, who is rated the top high school tight end in the nation by recruiting service Rivals.com, broke his hand during the game over Anclote. Zephyrhills also won its preseason matchup against Central High, 31-20. With both teams looking to start off the regular season strong and continue their momentum, Friday's game should be a good one. The kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the home of the Bulldogs, 6335 12th St. in Zephyrhills. The Gators' home opener is set for Aug. 9 in The Swamp with a …

7-On-7 Summer Football: A Look At The Gators

Land O' Lakes High School hosted this week's 7-on-7 summer football games.

The overcast sky provided a cool Tuesday evening as Land O’ Lakes High School hosted this week’s 7-on-7 Summer Football League. The football programs in attendance were the Land O’ Lakes Gators, Gulf Buccaneers, Fivay Falcons, Ridgewood Rams, Anclote Sharks, and Nature Coast Sharks. The Gators looked sharp against their opponents, Anclote and Nature Coast, even though they were missing their star tight end, Kent Taylor. However, Jackson Cannon filled in nicely at the tight end position, and connected with quarterback, Ryan Bird, on many occasions. Bird was throwing with precision and reading coverage very well. Not only was the offense clicking, but the defense was covering ground well, too. The Gator defense had many stops, and a few …
