Land O' Lakes Mom, Artist Launches New Business

Bugaboo Bear Designs offers custom, hand-drawn artwork for children's rooms.

Picture this: launching a new business based on a lifelong love. That’s just what Amanda Kammarada did. The Land O’ Lakes resident and mother of two taught Kindergarten for six years before becoming a stay-at-home mom. But her artistic side, which she often utilized on her classrooms, still needed an outlet. “I have always loved to draw ever since I can remember,” Kammarada said. As a teacher, she enjoyed making things in the classroom for her students. Kammarada also creates art for her own children’s rooms. “I wanted to put my talent to use and create art for others,” she said. So Bugaboo Bear Designs was born.  The company, named after her 1-year-old son Dominic—it’s his nickname—offers custom, hand-drawn artwork for children. “The …

Land O' Lakes Home Sales on the Rise

Prices are up, and time on the market has decreased by 18 percent, according to a local Realtor.

Land O' Lakes homes sales are up, and that has buyers and sellers moving quickly. "This time last year, there was a year's supply of homes on the market. There is only a two-a-half month supply now. Properties priced right, especially under $200,000, will have a heavy volume of viewings immediately upon being listed," Realtor Rene Van Hout of F.R.O.G. Realty Pros said. Many Realtors are hosting open houses the first few days after a home is listed, in order to accomodate the large number of showings, she said. Usually those properties will have multiple offers within days of going on the market. Home sales were up 12 percent nationally in January, the highest increase since 2005, Van Hout said.  Pasco County's statistics showed an 8 percent…

Raw Local Honey Keeps Business Buzzing

Fisher Honey Bees offers a variety of honey products produced on the Fisher family's Land O' Lakes farm.

Down a rambling, picturesque dirt road, a family farm is buzzing with activity. Goats, rabbits, chickens—and of course, bees. Jonathan and Judi Fisher of Land O' Lakes founded Fisher Honey Bees in 2008. Jonathan, a fourth generation beekeeper, harvested honey on the farm for the family’s personal use, but the supply became abundant, Judi Fisher said. After giving it away to their family and friends and still having plenty, a business took flight. Now, Fisher Honey Bees sells its raw local honey products at retailers throughout the Tampa Bay area, and nationwide through their online store. "We are members of the Tampa Bay Beekeepers Association as well as the Florida State Beekeepers Association. Jonathan is also a member of the Florida …

Combining Tattoos and Organic Leads To Unique Local Business

Henna artist Lori Bessette creates her own pastes from mostly organic materials to turn a body into a work of art.

Lori Bessette is an artist. Your body, her canvas. She founded Stained in 2009 after coming to a crossroads in her career. She wanted her work to express her creative side; an initial search into tattoo apprenticeship led to her discovery of henna art. Immediately fascinated, she immersed herself in the techniques and culture of henna. “I went crazy and just studied, studied studied,” Bessette said. “I wanted to know everything.” For the first year, she did henna tattoos for free, she said, just to be able to do it. Now, she travels nationwide teaching henna art techniques. Bessette makes her own henna paste, something she said is both intimidating and frustrating to henna artists. “The consistency has to be perfect or the design won’t …
