A Son's Inspiring Dedication To Mom With Brain Cancer
A Land O' Lakes man is taking on the disease that has so far taken his mother's sight and memory—raising money and promoting awareness to help others battling brain cancer.
You have stage four brain cancer. That's what doctors told Suzanne Ciani when she went to the emergency room for her headaches in the fall of 2011. Doctors removed one mass, only to have it return with two others a few months later. "In June they removed the original and the third, the second tumor is inoperable," son Chris Ciani of Land O' Lakes said. "Since her last surgery she has lost almost all sight and her short-term memory is nonexistent. She has been on chemo and radiation since." But Suzanne's a warrior. And with the help of her family, she's spawned a battle beyond her own in an effort to help others fighting for their lives. It's big, it's fun, and it's green: Learning Gate Community School's EcoFest will take over the school's 27-acre campus on Saturday. The event will feature 120 local vendors, from local artists to green products, organic farms and alternative health practicioners. It also will include live music, entertainment, a kids' zone workshops and demonstrations. And, of course, there will be more than a few pies thrown at Patch editor Keli Sipperley. New Group Brings Veterans Together for Food, Fellowship
Marine Forever also will be staunch supporters of military and community activities such as the Wounded Warrior Program and Toys for Tots, its founder says.
Once a Marine, Always a Marine, that's the motto. And a local veteran recently formed a group to bring those who served together to continue to serve. The Marine Forever veterans group was founded by David Kirk, a Marine veteran and past commandant of the Marine Corps League of Tampa. The group builds upon the "Once a Marine, Always a Marine" slogan, Kirk wrote in an email. "The new group was formed to give veterans living in the Central Pasco and Northern Hillsborough counties a venue for meeting to have fun, food, fellowship and inter-service camaraderie with special emphasis placed on promoting the heritage and traditions of the United States Marine Corps," Kirk said.
