The Sheriff wants County Commissioners to consier giving a jail expansion priority over a plan to build a courthouse in Land O' Lakes.
Pasco County’s inmate population has swelled. In the first quarter of the year, the Land O’ Lakes Jail recorded an average daily inmate population that was about 11 percent over capacity. Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco and his command staff want to make it clear that the Sheriff’s Office want more space. Maj. Ed Beckman talked to the Pasco County Public Safety Coordinating Council, which focuses on jail issues, on Friday about the high numbers at the jail. “We really need to explore now adding onto the facility,” he said. Nocco told the council that the expansion is a …

County commissioners agreed to explore a proposal to build a $28 million courthouse tower on the campus of the Land O’ Lakes jail.
The days of those accused of crimes in Pasco County reporting to either the Dade City or New Port Richey courthouses might be numbered. The Pasco County Commission unanimously agreed Tuesday, Jan. 22, to take a preliminary step forward on a plan to build a three-story, $28-million courthouse tower on the grounds of the Land O’ Lakes jail. The move, proponents say, will consolidate criminal courts and the jail in one central location. Though many questions and concerns remain about the proposal, commissioners opted to instruct County Administrator John Gallagher to explore the proposal further. Gallagher will report back to the commission at a later date with more details about potential bond funding and more concrete design and …

The pigs are raised by inmates at the Land O' Lakes jail.
The Pasco County Sheriff's Office has a program at the Land O' Lakes jail taxpayers can go hog wild about. The department's swine program saved Pasco citizens more than $13,000 in 2011. And that figure is likely to increase for 2012. This time last year, the program had 60 pigs, Deputy Keith Adams said. On Thursday, that figure stood at 243 pigs, not including more than a dozen that were born that very afternoon. Swine-raising is just one portion of the jail's agriculture program, which includes hydroponic gardens and cattle raising. The sheriff's office's Inmate Labor Section oversees the agricultural undertakings, as well as the overall grounds keeping at the facility. The programs were designed to save taxpayer dollars and raise the …
