Lightning Swimmers Ready to Splash in 2nd Pool

The Land O’ Lakes-based team will soon expand operations to Hudson.

Though a few hurdles still stand in the way, the Land O’ Lakes Lightning Swim Team is confident that a planned expansion into Hudson will soon become reality. “(I) just signed the contract 30 minutes ago,” said Brett Ewald, president of the nonprofit swim team on Friday, March 23. That contract is with Pasco County. It affords the Lightning the ability to establish a swim team at the Veteran’s Memorial Park pool in Hudson. The team would be for swimmers ages 5 to 18 in the Hudson and New Port Richey areas. The Lightning offers both developmental and competitive swimming to youngsters in Pasco County and beyond. The original Land O’ Lakes branch swims at the Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex’s pool. The team was responsible for keeping the …

Commission to Make Final Decision on Land O’ Lakes Pool

The Pasco County board is expected to approve the agreement today with the Land O’ Lakes Lightning.

If all goes well at today’s special Pasco County Commission meeting, the Land O’ Lakes Lightning Swim Team will take over most of the responsibility for running the recreation complex’s pool. The final agreement between the county and the swim team is on the board’s consent agenda. In most cases, consent agenda items are approved by the board. “It basically includes everything we wanted it to include,” said Brett Ewald, president of the Lightning. “I think everybody got what they wanted.” Commissioner Pat Mulieri calls the agreement a win. "In these difficult economic times, it is important to form partnerships with the private sector," she said. "Public-private partnerships are the future. I appreciate that the Lightning has stepped up to…

County Staff will Float Pool Proposal Before Commission Today

Pasco County staff is looking for direction from the elected body.

The plan to save the Land O’ Lakes pool from closing is expected to get an initial, nonbinding, thumbs up or down from the Pasco County Commission on Tuesday, Aug. 23. “There’s a draft of the agreement with the Lightning — it’s not the final agreement,” said Rick Buckman, the parks department director. “I think what we (the county) want (is) to get the board to decide whether they want to fund these issues or not — give direction on whether to do the agreement or not.” The Land O’ Lakes Lightning Swim Team has been working with parks department officials to draft a proposal to take over some of the management and financial burdens of operating the Land O’ Lakes pool. The nonprofit swim team stepped forward earlier this summer when it was …

Commissioners Receptive to Plan for Keeping Land O' Lakes Pool Open

Commissioners like the partnership with the Lightning swim team and would like to see a deal for the public pool in Hudson.

An idea to keep the public pool open in Land O’ Lakes got a positive reception Tuesday from county commissioners, who wish a similar arrangement could be reached for the facility in Hudson. Facing another tight budget year, there is no money in the spending plan for pools at the Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex and Veteran’s Memorial Park. Pasco County commissioners were presented at their Tuesday meeting with the outline of a way to keep the Land O’ Lakes pool open as well as a petition with more than 1,100 signatures from residents urging the pools stay open. The plan put together by the Land O’ Lakes Lightning Swim Team and the Pasco County Parks and Recreation Department would reduce the county’s cost of running the pool It would still…

Swimmers Set to Raise Money for Shriners Hospitals

A mini-meet takes place Aug. 20 at the Land O’ Lakes pool.

Members of the Land O’ Lakes Lightning Swim Team are gearing up to make a big splash to help children in need. The upcoming Shriners Mini-Meet is being staged to raise money for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Tampa location. The hospital provides care for children “with a host of orthopedic and neuromusculoskeletal conditions in an environment designed to put children at ease,” according to its website. It does so regardless of parent ability to pay. The idea for the meet came about as a way for the team’s 140-plus children to learn about helping others, said Lightning president Brett Ewald. Team members range in age from 5 up through high school. “We want to kind of give them a little civic lesson,” Ewald said about the event. “It’s …

Land O’ Lakes Pool Proposal Almost Ready

A plan to save the pool will soon be presented to the Pasco County Commission.

While final details are still being hammered out, officials from the Land O’ Lakes Lightning Swim Team are confident they’ll have a proposal to save the pool put together very soon. “We’re getting close,” said Brett Ewald, president of the nonprofit swim organization. When news broke earlier this summer that Pasco County was going to cut funding for the Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex’s pool, Lightning officials swung into action to find a way to keep the facility open. They have been working closely with the Pasco County Parks and Recreation Department to create a proposal that takes the financial burden of the pool off the county and leaves the facility open for swim team, high school and public use. “I think we’ll have a plan that we …
