Pasco County naturism adds another fine resort in 1996 to its growing list of places to go clothing optional.
The upscale naturist resort now known as Caliente got its start when Richard LaRiviere or Hyker as he is known, the current owner of the River Boat Nudist Resort, bought a parcel of land off US 41 in Land O'Lakes between 1985 and 1987 totaling about 111 acres. On April 26, 1987 the naturist club he called Joie de Vivre or "Joy of Life" Club was born. Over 250 guests were there to open the Blackberry Lakes property which offered the use of the property’s three lakes. The Joie de Vivre Club included the land which later became Caliente Resort. Fred Bischoff lived at Lake Como Family Nudist Resort but dreamed of a creating a place of his own. He wanted a place that would allow the members to have clothing-optional choices. Bischoff was a minister, a stockbroker and a Realtor. His dream became a purchase on April 11, 1980. A grand opening ceremony for Paradise Lakes was held on Aug. 16, 1980, featuring a water ski show, naked sky divers and an open bar. The original 42 acres grew to 72 acres and included a beach, a y-shaped pool, a whirlpool, 3 tennis courts and a 4,000 square foot clubhouse. The community's one bedroom, one bath units sold for $24,000 each at the time. During this time, Bischoff became the president of his daughter's PTA and his wife served as PTA president …

This ongoing series explains how Pasco County became the naturist capital of the USA. The third nudist venue in Pasco County was created in 1959 as Florida Naturist Park. Ward Gulvin was looking in a garbage dump in Clearwater. A discarded newspaper advertisement for Pasco County land caught his eye: several fishing lakes, 120 acres of forest and pasture in Hudson. A paradise isolated enough for running around naked. Rumbling up a dirt road, the pioneering nudist moved his young wife, Dorothy, and the first of their seven children to the backwoods of Hudson in the late 1950s. The second nudist venue in Pasco County began by a disgruntled Lake Como customer (we shall call him Al) who wanted to put Lake Como's Avery "Bru" Brubaker out of business. Al wanted to make the most beautiful place in Pasco County by purchasing 60 acres of Dupree Gardens, which was a very popular botanical garden in Land O'Lakes in the 1920s and 1930s. Al told Bru that he would soon be put out of business due to the pending sale of Dupree Gardens to Al for the hefty sum of $120,000 in the mid 1940s. Al knew it would be a big draw for nudists across America. Bru was a title attorney for Tampa at that time. The timeframe was the late 1930s. A man name Bru walks into his doctor's office with a skin problem. His doctor tells him he needs more sun on his skin to help with his condition. The doctor suggests he become a nudist to help him out. Bru doesn't like the idea but his wife, Dorothy, convinces him to try it out to see if he might like it. He loves it. Bru invites his friends to head out on the weekends to nearby Gasparilla Island and Honeymoon Island. While relaxing there in the 1930s, the group comes up with the concept of being one big nude happy family as a motto for a naturist resort.
