Local delegates Alison Bereke Marano and Shannon Love said the Republican Party is doing a great service to Obama campaign by being ignorant.
Florida delegates attending the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., talked politics with South Carolina Patch Political Editor Shawn Drury on Monday. Last week, Ann Romney and Condoleezza Rice made an appeal to women voters during last week's Republican National Convention in Tampa. Alison Bereke Morano and Shannon Love talked about what President Barack Obama needs to do to reach out to women voters and to win their votes. "The Republicans are doing a great service by being so ignorant," Morano said. "And by showing their disregard for women and what they think we are actually about." Morano is the vice-chair of the Florida Democratic Party and lives in Pasco County. Love said that she didn't feel the gap in female voters …

Connie Rose is a voice for trafficked minors. She works with Wendy Vazquez-Ernest, who teaches Rape Aggression Defense classes at the University of South Florida. The two hope to prevent teens and young women from falling prey to predators.
Right now, as Week of Welcome fades into memory and college campuses are merely days into full operation, naïve freshman, away from home, possibly for the first time, are being watched. Blondes, brunettes, redheads – bespectacled bookworms, pink haired video gamers and underage partiers. Each are new on campus, trying to find their footing in an environment completely alien to them. The Predator Makes His Move The freshman is sitting alone, wishing she had taken a better meal plan. She peeks into her wallet a third time, but she cannot will a $5 bill to appear to buy the latte that is splashed across the coffee shop sign. In a college logoed T-shirt and ripped jeans, young, clean cut, handsome or “hot"vas her friends back home would …

Fed up with problems from RNC-provided buses, the Republican Party of Florida hired a charter bus company to transport its delegates.
The Republican Party of Florida is hoping delegates will have a smoother ride for the rest of the convention, now that the organization has chartered a bus company to provide transportation. On Tuesday, delegates were late to the opening day of the Republican National Convention because RNC-contracted buses were not sent to pick them up. Then the delegates were stuck on buses for hours Tuesday after the convention ended for the evening. "It was an absolute mess up," said Florida delegate Pat Fahey of Daytona Beach. Fahey did not arrive back to Palm Harbor's Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club until after 3 a.m. Wednesday. "Nobody knew where the buses were located when we came out of the convention. Everybody was sending us to a different place. …

Students from the Culinary Arts Academy at Land O' Lakes High School are in downtown Tampa this week at the Republican National Convention.
Wesley Earley was 8 years old when he figured out he wanted to become a chef. His goal? To own his own restaurant one day, serving a mixture of Italian and Southern cuisine. His "curation dish" - mashed potatoes with Italian sausage, onions and peppers - might even make the menu's cut. This week, the 17-year-old and about two dozen of his classmates in the Culinary Arts Academy at Land O' Lakes High School spent part of their week in downtown Tampa for the Republican National Convention. Donning chefs' hats and coats, culinary arts students are receiving hands-on experience in the kitchens of the Tampa Bay Times Forum. Criteria required students to be 16 years old and have a minimal grade average of a 'B' to participate, which dwindled the…
They’ll have to make a 15-minute hike to the convention tomorrow.
First they were left without transportation from Palm Harbor’s Innisbrook Resort to the Republican National Convention in downtown Tampa. Then they were stuck on a bus for hours following the convention Tuesday night – not making it back to the resort until after 3 a.m. Wednesday, according to TBO. Now, Florida’s Republican delegation is facing a 15-minute hike from the security perimeter to the convention as officials try to straighten out the transportation problems facing the state’s top GOPers. "The (Republican National Committee) needs to fix this bus problem … We need to take care of our delegates," TBO quoted Adam Putnam, Florida’s agriculture commissioner as saying. “It was a complete breakdown.” According to TBO, the Republican …
Poor weather blamed for lack of expected uptick in customers.
While corporate policy prevented most Wiregrass store managers from speaking on the record, the Republican National Convention has not driven any additional customers to the outdoor mall by most accounts. Gads of delegates are staying 6 miles to the north at Saddlebrook, but Tuesday was looking typical at best in terms of customers. “I hate to say it, but yeah, it might be worse,” said Bill Bolton, who owns The Pretzel Twister food stand. The owners of Wiregrass had been hoping for an uptick in traffic. The All American Festival, designed to coincide with the RNC, kicked off Monday with special discounts. The multi-day event features music, entertainment and discounts. Shop owners say poor weather stirred up by Isaac is to blame, and …

Instead of a financial windfall, these restaurant owners say they can't wait for the RNC to be over.
The owners of The Metro Restaraunt and Lounge on North Franklin Street in downtown Tampa were looking forward to working their usual 15 hour days this week. At lunch they hoped the lounge would be packed with delegates in town for the nearby Republican National Convention. At dinner they were looking forward to tables surrounded by some of the estimated 50,000 visitors in Tampa for the convention. Instead, owners Marc Zolkowski and Bill Nelligar, from Wesley Chappel, are sitting at the bar, alone, sipping beer and wondering what happened. "The way the City (of Tampa) and the Downtown Partnership put it out, we'd have 50,000 visitors and we'd be swamped," said Zolkowski. The three owners of The Metro figured this week would be a good time …
