Land O' Lakes Football Goes on the Road

Tonight ends district play for both the Seahawks and Gators.

Land O' Lakes football fans will have to drive a bit to catch this week's action. Both teams have away games tonight. Sunlake Take on Central The Sunlake Seahawks (8-1, 5-1 Class 6A District 6) clinched their first playoff berth in school history with a 20-13 win over River Ridge (5-3, 3-3) last Friday. The accomplishment was slightly overshadowed by their 21-10 win over rival Land O' Lakes the week before. They were two of three signature wins for the Seahawks this season, not including a gritty, ugly 13-8 win over Nature Coast Tech back on Oct. 6. The Hawks have a district road game at Central this Friday and a home finale against Gulf next week. Neither game can affect their playoff standing. Hernando (7-2, 6-0) won last week's game …

Sunlake Makes History with Playoff Berth

The Sunlake Seahawks made school history on Friday night by clinching their first playoff appearance, with a 20-13 victory over River Ridge.

For the first time in Sunlake’s 5-year school history, the Seahawks have clinched the playoffs with a 20-13 victory over River Ridge in what Seahawks coach Bill Browning called a “backyard brawl.” Sunlake took an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter as quarterback Cameron Stoltz found Eddie Burgos in the endzone for a 5-yard touchdown pass, and then failed to convert the 2-point conversion. The Knights would respond with a huge score on 4th down, by Austin Schwarz from the 1-yard line, and the Seahawks would block the extra point to keep the game knotted up at 6 a piece, which would be the score going into halftime. It would be deep into the third quarter before either team struck again, and it was the Seahawks Stoltz hooking up with Jamal …

Gators, Seahawks Hit the Road Tonight

Land O' Lakes Patch previews Friday night's matchups.

Area prep football fans will have to take to the road to watch the Gators and Seahawks in action tonight, Sept. 30. Here's a look at what both teams are facing. Sunlake Looks to Remain Undefeated The Seahawks 4-0 (1-0) are still flying high after a 49-16 trouncing of Springstead. They finally halted their two-game string of shutouts but still managed to handle Springstead in their first district game. Senior quarterback Cameron Stoltz went 8-for-13 for 226 yards and three touchdowns. Stoltz is the current leader in passing yards in District 6. Head Coach Bill Browning called out senior Jerome Samuels, as did USAF by naming him player of the week. He carried the ball 11 times for 129 yards and three touchdowns. "On one touchdown run, he ran…

Land O' Lakes Football Players Hone Skills Over The Summer

The 7-on-7 games are keeping Gators and Seahawks players on their toes.

Spring practices for high school football teams concluded in May and preseason workouts cannot officially begin until August. For some players, however, there is an outlet during that downtime. The Pasco County 7-on-7 Summer Football League affords teams an opportunity to look at the skill of their players for the upcoming season. Sunlake High School Coach Bill Browning and Brian Wachtel, who takes over at Land O’ Lakes after an offseason coaching shakeup, are both taking long, hard looks. Sunlake is coming off its best season in its four-year history, narrowly missing out on the playoffs while winning a school-record eight games. Meanwhile, Land O’ Lakes intends to extend its county-record playoff run to 15. “Our biggest goal is …

Sunlake Tops Pasco, Moves On To Regional Finals

The soccer team is making school history.

The Sunlake Seahawks have done it again. They have bested yet another team that typically dominates the county. On Tuesday night, Feb. 8, the Seahawks traveled to Pasco and beat them on their own field to the tune of 2-1. Jordan Landry scored his 51st and likely most important goal of the year. Pasco and Land O’ Lakes combined to pin three losses on Sunlake this season. Since then, the Seahawks have beat them in order to advance to the Regional Finals for the first time in school history. Head Coach Sam Koleduk, the only head coach in Sunlake’s brief history said before the game, “We always play Pasco really tough.” Even Coach Koleduk has to be pleasantly surprised to find himself with a chance to go to state’s championship. The Seahawks …

Good Showing For Seahawks At Districts

Sunlake came in second behind a strong Dunedin team but still managed to qualify 11 wrestlers for regionals this weekend.

The Dunedin Falcons have been penciled in as district wrestling champions for weeks, months even. The Sunlake Seahawks showed up Feb. 5 and captured second place with 137 points. They were able to qualify 11 wrestlers for regionals and even capture titles at 112 pounds and 119 pounds. A highly anticipated match between Dunedin’s Shaun Shakoor and Sunlake’s John Ortiz went right down to the wire. Shakoor is ranked No. 4 in the state and was a favorite in the tournament but with 20 seconds left in the match and trailing 6-7, Sunlake’s John Ortiz executed a take down reversal and won the match at 8-7. Wesley Wood also won his championship match at 119 pounds. Other wrestlers that qualified for regionals for Sunlake were: They will move on to …

Seahawks Surge Into Soccer Regionals

Sunlake goes up against Pasco in tonight's semifinals game.

The Sunlake Seahawks will be making an unlikely appearance in the 4A Regionals Tuesday night against rival Pasco. Land O' Lakes High School is usually the pedigree of Pasco County soccer. They have been district champions four years running and show up strong at regionals. This year is a different story. Sunlake Head Coach Sam Koleduk has his team geared up and ready to make a run at the regional finals on Friday. It has not been an easy road. Land O' Lakes and Pasco have handed three losses to the Seahawks this year, including a nail-biter in the District 8 Finals. Sunlake played a tough game and kept the score tied at one most of the game. It was only on a deflection off a free kick, late in the game that put Land O' Lakes over the top …

Sunlake Looks to Keep Rivarly 'Heated' With Land O' Lakes

Sunlake travels to Land O' Lakes tonight for second meeting of the season with the Gators.

The Sunlake Seahawks (7-10) are taking a short trip over to the Land O' Lakes Gators' (10-7) homec ourt tonight, Friday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m.  In these two teams' last meeting, the Seahawks routed the Gators 51-44. The transfer of "(Darrell Warren and Tim Crews-Hill) makes the rivalry even more heated," says Sunlake's head Coach Mark Hall. Warren and Crews-Hill were both on Sunlake's varsity basketball team last year and transferred to Land O' Lakes this year. Tonight's game is not only important because of the familiarity of players on both sides, but because the game is a 4A District 8 game that determines the seeding of the teams come playoff time. This matchup has every ounce of potential to be an entertaining and heated game for pride…

Seahawks Trounce Hurricanes In Soccer

Seahawks take the win 2-0.

After an uneventful start to their Dec. 22 match against Citrus County's Hurricanes, the Seahawks came out ahead in a 2-0 game on the Sunlake field. The first half of the match brought several attempts to score on both sides of the field, but each time the attempt was thwarted by the goalie. Both teams played aggressively, but the Seahawks commanded the most control during the first half, keeping the Hurricanes' goalie busy blocking numerous attempts. This aggressive playing led to numerous infractions of the minor variety resulting in a few free kicks but no expulsions from the field. It wasn't until the second half that things began to heat up. The first goal of the game for the Seahawks came from a penalty kick. After much back-and-…
