Land O' Lakes, Sunlake Football Heading to New Districts?

Next fall, both Land O' Lakes and Sunlake football teams will most likely find themselves in a realigned district.

Will Sunlake and Land O' Lakes high football players find themselves in new districts when the gridiron action heats up again next year? That's the question on a lot of minds and one that will likely pan out with some changes next season. The realignments are still tentative, however. When districts and classifications were realigned two years ago, they went very much the way of the original, "tentative" realignments though.  The main thrust behind realignment is to keep up with enrollment numbers at the hundreds of high schools in the state. Newer schools tend to move up in classification as older schools tend to simmer back down into smaller ones. Don't worry; the budding Land O' Lakes/Sunlake football rivalry isn't going anywhere. Senior Seahawks Etch Records, Tradition into Sunlake Football

The last two seasons have defined Sunlake football more than any in the program's brief history.

Last year was a major one for Sunlake's football record book— first playoff appearance, first win over Land O' Lakes High and first playoff victory, among others. The 2012 Seahawks, however, are going to come up just short of making the playoffs but their legacy, and records will be set in stone. With only one returning offensive line starter and losing their top three rushers from 2011, the Seahawks had the look of a cellar-dweller in Class 6A District 6. They proved to be just the opposite and showed it from the very first game. During the season opener against Hudson, the Seahawks broke the single game rushing record and they did it with converted receiver, senior Eddie Burgos. "We had a need there (at running back), he's (Burgos) got …

Gators Clip Seahawks 56-53 in District Playoff Tuneup

The Sunlake Seahawks hosted the Land O' Lakes Gators in the final district game of the regular season.

With district seeding already locked up, it would be easy for the hosting Seahawks and visiting Gators to cruise into the Feb. 6 opening of district playoffs. But the Seahawk/Gator rivalry proved too strong for that to happen. The Gators came on strong late in the first half and led 31-25 at halftime. The Gators came out stronger in the third quarter. At one point, they stretched the lead to 11 but they let off the gas down the stretch and the Hawks closed it to 56-53 as Seahawk senior Pedro Pabon hit a long-distance, buzzer-beater to end the game. "We didn't play so well against Land O'Lakes the first time," said Seahawk head coach Mark Hall. "This time out, it was an improvement—it showed we can compete with them." Land O'Lakes leading …

Sunlake Makes History with Playoff Berth

The Sunlake Seahawks made school history on Friday night by clinching their first playoff appearance, with a 20-13 victory over River Ridge.

For the first time in Sunlake’s 5-year school history, the Seahawks have clinched the playoffs with a 20-13 victory over River Ridge in what Seahawks coach Bill Browning called a “backyard brawl.” Sunlake took an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter as quarterback Cameron Stoltz found Eddie Burgos in the endzone for a 5-yard touchdown pass, and then failed to convert the 2-point conversion. The Knights would respond with a huge score on 4th down, by Austin Schwarz from the 1-yard line, and the Seahawks would block the extra point to keep the game knotted up at 6 a piece, which would be the score going into halftime. It would be deep into the third quarter before either team struck again, and it was the Seahawks Stoltz hooking up with Jamal …

District Games on Tap for Gators, Seahawks Tonight

Both Land O' Lakes teams are fighting for a berth in the district finals.

The regular season is drawing near a close, but it's not over yet for Land O' Lakes two high school football teams. Sunlake Takes on River Ridge Having established themselves as the power team of south Pasco, all that's left for the Seahawks (7-1, 4-1 Class 6A District 6) is to secure the number two spot in District 6 and a 2011 playoff spot. There is an outside chance they could claim District 6 but only if Hernando collapses against both Nature Coast Tech and Mitchell. To clinch a playoff spot, they will have to beat a very good River Ridge team (5-2, 3-2). The emotion has been through the roof for the Seahawks over the last few weeks. A 13-8 nail-biter with Nature Coast on Oct. 6 was followed by a heart-breaking 22-7 loss to Hernando, …

Gators, Seahawks Face Off in Crosstown Rivalry

The Sunlake Seahawks and Land O' Lakes Gators play each other tonight.

The big rivalry game is finally here, and the stakes are through the roof. Sunlake High (5-1, 3-1 Class 6A-District 6) is coming off a crushing 22-7 loss to Hernando (5-2, 4-0). Land O' Lakes (4-2, 3-2) is coming off a 17-15 win over Nature Coast Tech. Hernando now has the inside track to the district title, having beat both Sunlake and Land O' Lakes. River Ridge (4-2, 2-2) still has a shot with both Sunlake and Land O' Lakes left on the schedule, but the Seahawks and Gators will be playing for their playoff lives Thursday night, Oct. 20. With Hernando holding the tiebreaker over both of them, Sunlake and Land O' Lakes are stuck playing musical chairs with one chair left. While this rivalry is not really official — Sunlake has yet to win…

Gators, Seahawks both Eye Wins in Tonight's Football Action

The Gators host Pasco and the Seahawks travel to Wiregrass Ranch this week.

Land O' Lakes football fans are in for a big second week of high school action as both local teams enter Friday's games coming off victories. Here's a look at what's in store for Land O' Lakes and Sunlake high school football players tonight, Sept. 9: Land O' Lakes Gators In what is certainly the oldest rivalry in the county, albeit, no longer a district rivalry, the Gators (1-0) host the Pasco Pirates (1-0) this Friday. The Pirates smoked Cavalry Christian 54-27 in their home opener, while Land O' Lakes handled Zephyrhills 36-21 in their regular season debut. Senior quarterback Ryan Bird continues to impress and dispel doubt. He threw for 169 yards on just nine completions, with two touchdowns in last week's game. "My confidence level is …
