The History of Veterans Day

As Land O' Lakes residents reflect on those who served and those who continue to serve, here is a look at the origin of the day designated in their honor.

Information provided by U.S. Census Bureau and its 2011 American Community Survey. Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars. Land O' Lakes Schools Open on Veterans Day

The national holiday is observed on Monday, Nov. 12 this year.

As people across America recognize men and women who have served in the armed forces, Land O' Lakes students will have to hit the books. All Pasco County Public Schools are open Monday, Nov. 12, according to the district's calendar. Most county government offices, however, are closed in observance of the holiday.  While students in Pasco don't get the day off, most schools do have some observance of the holiday on their calendars. And for those who are just tired of hitting the books, there's a break on the horizon. Pasco schools close Nov. 19-23 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.
